of Gerald Charles

A Maison With a Designer’s Soul

When we talk about watches, we often speak of models, specifications, and brand heritage. It’s easy to list the Maisons behind iconic timepieces – but how often do we speak of the designers who shaped them?

Rarely are designers in the watch industry as closely associated with their creations as their Haute Couture counterparts are. There is, however, a notable exception:

Gérald Charles Genta.

‘If I were born in Italy, I would design cars, in Paris fashion, but I was born in Switzerland so I design watches.’

– Gerald Charles Catalogue 2005

Nicknamed the Picasso of watches, Mr Genta founded his eponymous Maison, Gerald Charles, in the year 2000. At its heart lies a commitment to bold, instantly recognisable design: watches that marry technical sophistication with joy, precision with personality.

Then as now, Gerald Charles is dedicated to creating pieces that put a smile on collector’s faces. Twenty-five years on, the spirit of Gerald Charles remains unchanged, even as the Maison continues to evolve. To mark this milestone, we cordially invite you to embark on a journey through time, a celebration of artistry, innovation, and enduring legacy.

2000 – 2011

Building A Strong Foundation

When it All Started: The Birth of Gerald Charles in 2000

Before Gérald Genta, the term ‘watch designer’ didn’t exist. Though he saw himself foremost as an artist, it was Genta who shaped this role. Over the course of a storied career, he crafted some of the most iconic timepieces in horological history: Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak (1970), IWC’s Ingenieur, and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, to name but a few.

In 2000, after decades of groundbreaking work, Mr Genta set out to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Yet, true to his nature as an endlessly creative visionary, his mind brimmed with fresh ideas. By the age of 69, after three years spent perfecting prototypes, he founded his eponymous Maison,

‘When I was 65, I thought I better retire, so I sold my company Gérald Genta. Then I realised I could not live without creating new designs. You cannot stop your brains from expressing ideas. If you do not give an outlet for your creativity, you suffocate. Every day I have new ideas for watch designs and I sketch them immediately.’ – Mr Genta, 2004

With the Maison bearing his first two names, Mr Genta forged an enduring bond between his personal identity and his creations. His vision was clear: to establish a brand that resonated with a discerning niche of collectors, offering timepieces in limited quantities. Gerald Charles was not merely another chapter in his career; it marked his return to the heart of watchmaking, a vocation he cherished until his final days.

A Renaissance in Watchmaking: The First Gerald Charles Collection

In March 2001, a year after its founding, Gerald Charles unveiled its inaugural collection. Aptly named ‘Renaissance,’ this collection celebrated the revival of Mr Genta’s artistic genius and paid homage to Italian craftsmanship with its distinctive tonneau-shaped case.

Crafted in gold or steel, the Renaissance case is a study in refined elegance, with softly rounded lines. Its dial, however, breaks from convention. Marked by asymmetry and the signature ‘smiling’ curvature at 6 o’clock, the design exudes a sense of playful optimism, a reflection of Mr Genta’s spirited outlook on life. This iconic ‘smile’ would become a recurring motif in his work, a hallmark of his ability to infuse joy into the art of watchmaking.

The Renaissance models showcased a spectrum of dial colours and designs, offering something for every discerning collector. Beyond the standard 40 mm Renaissance case, the collection included variations tailored to different preferences, from the more compact Renaissance ladies’ model (GC5) to the bold Jumbo edition (GC15).

Telling Time Around the World: Renaissance World Time GC11

The Renaissance World Time GC11 was designed for globetrotters and connoisseurs who sought the ability to track 24 time zones without sacrificing style. Encased in a sleek 40 mm steel case, the watch features a domed sapphire crystal and offers water resistance up to 3 ATM. A crown on the right side of the case is complemented by two pushers, allowing for precise adjustments. At its heart lies the 100 World Time Automatic movement, ensuring both reliability and sophistication. The black dial matches the patterned black rubber strap, offering a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic.

The World Time complication is positioned at 9 o’clock, with city names in bold red lettering and a red arrow indicating the corresponding time via a rotating disc. At 3 o’clock, a date display adds a touch of practicality. The dial’s distinctive design features a white outer minute track, a wavy-styled guillochage, and differently sized luminous dots as hour markers, paired with the only numeral at 12 o’ clock. Both the steel baton and lozenge-shaped hands for the hours and minutes are coated in Super-LumiNova, ensuring readability in any lighting condition.

The Brand’s Heart and Soul:

Gérald Charles Genta

With the Renaissance collection, Mr Genta returned to the watchmaking stage. But who was the man behind these revolutionary designs? A Swiss visionary of Italian descent, Mr Genta was an artist whose creativity reshaped the watchmaking industry.

Born in 1931, Genta began his journey in fine watchmaking at the age of 23, when he designed the Universal Genève Polerouter which now is a sought-after collector’s piece. Though initially a painter, he turned to watchmaking at 27, a decision that would redefine the craft. By 1961, Genta was calling himself one of the first professional watch designers, and in 1969, he established his eponymous brand.

Over more than two decades, Mr Genta introduced groundbreaking innovations to horology. He elevated steel to the status of a precious material, pioneered the octagonal case, and popularised the industrial aesthetic of exposed screws. His creations included over 100 models, such as the Grande Sonnerie in 1994 – then the most complicated watch in the world – and bespoke pieces for royalty, including the King of Saudi Arabia and the Spanish royal family. While his first brand was later acquired by Singaporean company The Hour Glass in 1996 and later Bvlgari, Gerald Charles has remained in the hands of Mr Genta’s friends and business partners: the Ziviani family.

Forging a Timeless Bond:

Gerald Charles and the Ziviani Family

The story of Gérald Charles and the Ziviani family began in 1982 at the Montres & Bijoux exhibition in Milan, a fair organised by Franco Ziviani. Their friendship blossomed over the years, and when Mr Genta founded Gerald Charles in 2000, he proposed that Franco work at his company. Although Franco declined the offer due to his role as founder and CEO of Audemars Piguet Italia S.p.A., he saw great potential in his brother Giampaolo. With his international experience and inclusive management style, Giampaolo soon formed a partnership with Mr Genta in 2003.

Giampaolo Ziviani became General Manager of Gerald Charles, while Mr Genta retained his role as Chief Designer. Together, they worked to realise Mr Genta’s vision of creating unique, bespoke pieces. This endeavour was not without challenges; as Giampaolo recalls, ‘it wasn’t always easy to be commercial, to be sustainable, in the long run.’ Yet, Genta’s unwavering dedication to artistry shone through. Each bespoke piece bore his personal signature, and the brand collaborated with master craftsmen – referred to as ‘les artisans du maestro’– to create exceptional cases, dials, and more.

Retracing the Racetrack:

The Turbo Collection (2003)

In 2003, Gerald Charles introduced its bold and dynamic Turbo collection. Like many of his iconic designs, Mr Genta drew inspiration from architectural and infrastructural forms – this time, the legendary curves and lines of historic racetracks. With its striking 46 mm case, the Turbo embodies the spirit of speed, precision, and determination. Its size and impressive curves create a bold presence on the wrist, making it as much a statement piece as a functional chronograph.

Four screws on the bezel and two domed pushers further enhance the watch’s distinctive design. Engineered for versatility, the models were water resistant up to 30 metres and available in various materials, including steel, steel with a PVD blacktop, and pink gold. These were complemented by either a robust steel bracelet or a sleek black leather strap. Staying true to the racing theme, each model was powered by an automatic chronograph movement featuring three counters for 60 seconds, 12 hours, and 30 minutes – save for one exquisite exception.

Well-timed: Turbo World Time GC28

The Turbo World Time GC28 combines bold design with global functionality, showcasing Gerald Charles’s mastery of technical and aesthetic innovation. Its steel case, enhanced with a sleek PVD blacktop, is paired with a matching strap featuring an intricate design: offset individual letters spelling out ‘Turbo’ across the links, lending a dynamic and modern touch. The oval dial is a striking fusion of white mother-of-pearl and lacquer, with the outer ring displaying the 60-second track in shimmering mother-of-pearl, while the central portion is rendered in smooth white lacquer.

A Fusion of Durability and Luxury: Sportside and Seaside Collections (2003)

In 2003, Gerald Charles expanded its repertoire with the launch of the Sportside and Seaside collections, each embodying a unique interpretation of durability and luxury. The Sportside line showcased sturdy chronographs with bold, colourful dials pa ired with matching leather straps, celebrating the dynamic energy of sports watches. In contrast, the Seaside collection took a more opulent approach, showcasing an uncommon blend of materials. Rubber-coated cases adorned with sapphires or diamonds exemplified the seamless integration of practicality and elegance.

Both collections shared the signature round case design and were crafted for collectors who value distinctiveness in their sports timepieces. With water resistance up to 3 ATM, the Sportside and Seaside models proved that functionality and sophistication could coexist, delivering durable watches that never compromised on style.

A Tale of Two Timepieces: Seaside GC9 and Sportside GC13

Among the standout models from these collections, the Seaside GC9 and Sportside GC13 perfectly embody the essence of their respective collections. The Seaside GC9 features a 42 mm steel and blue rubber case with a bezel adorned by 12 white gold screws. Its vibrant yellow guilloché dial, complemented by white numerals and counters for 60 seconds at 3 o’clock, 12 hours at 6 O’clock and 30 minutes at 9 o’clock. With three subdials, a date display between 4 and 5 o’clock, and a matching blue rubber strap, it is a dynamic take on diver’s watch aesthetics

In contrast, the Sportside GC13 offers a more classic appeal with a 40 mm steel case and a dial that blends a mother-of-pearl outer ring with a black guilloché centre. Roman numerals at 3 and 9 o’clock and a date display at 6 o’clock enhance its timeless design. Completed by a steel bracelet interspersed with screws, this timepiece showcases understated sophistication. Together, these models highlight the collections’ duality: vibrant dynamism and refined elegance.

‘We may be young but we have the potential to become a classic. We have broken the rules simply because there is no limit to the imagination. The artist is back again.’ – Giampaolo Ziviani

Birth of an Icon:

The Maestro Case (2005)

2005 proved to be a pivotal year for Gerald Charles with the introduction of the Maestro case, an iconic design that would later evolve into one of the Maison’s core collections. Inspired by the 17th-century Baroque architecture of Francesco Borromini, particularly his breathtaking creations in Rome, the Maestro’s case captures the harmonious balance of curves and symmetry found in Borromini’s masterpieces

Sketch of the Gerald Charles Maestro GC35 Tourbillon, 2005 by Gérald Genta.

The Maestro case, believed to be one of Mr Genta’s final designs, stands as a testament to his extraordinary ability to unite artistic vision with technical mastery. Its distinctive shape – somewhere between a square and an octagon – is instantly recognisable, enhanced by the signature ‘smile’ at 6 o’clock. Introduced in 2005, the Maestro collection began with the exceptional GC35 Tourbillon with an openworked dial and open caseback.

This watch encapsulated Mr Genta’s creative ethos with its white-gold case, striking a balance between bold design and functionality. At its heart, the movement takes center stage, featuring a moustache-shaped tourbillon bridge and hands resembling an artist’s brush – a nod to the designer himself. Meanwhile, a subtle minute track enhances legibility as the only remaining part of the dial. While later iterations of the Maestro evolved into a versatile collection of three-hand designs, chronographs, and advanced tourbillons, the GC35 Tourbillon laid the foundation for a legacy of timepieces that seamlessly blend elegance, ingenuity, and enduring craftsmanship.

Sliding Hours:

Maestro GC39 A-Evolution

The Maestro GC39 A-Evolution features a sophisticated sliding hour automatic calibre GC22 movement housed in a 42 mm gold case. At the center of the dial, a combination of white mother-of-pearl and deep blue lapis creates an eye-catching aesthetic, accentuated by blue dot indexes and a precise minute track. Its unique one-hand design indicates the minutes while the hours are visible through a window by 12 o’clock, adding a playful yet intricate touch. This special window showcases a ‛sliding hour’ mechanism. About five minutes before each hour, the central minute hand connects with the hour disc and pulls it upward. As the minute hand reaches the top of the dial (the full hour), the mechanism disengages, allowing the hour disc to remain at the top until the process begins again. This intricate interplay of artistry and precision creates a captivating experience of time-telling.

The dial is protected by a no-glare sapphire crystal, while the case ensures water resistance up to 3 ATM. Departing from its usual placement, the Gerald Charles logo is placed at 6 o’clock instead of 12, emphasizing the watch’s distinct character. Completing the design, a sleek black rubber strap enhances both comfort and modernity.

The ‘Squelette’ dial showcases an open-worked design with blue sapphires marking the hours at 12, 3, and 9 o’clock. They are set against a dark grey mainplate adorned with a subtle Perlage pattern. The silvery tones of the visible movement harmonize with sleek lancet-style hands featuring black inlays. The Gerald Charles logo is uniquely offset between 12 and 1 o’clock. Paired with a refined black crocodile strap and limited to just 12 pieces, the timepiece bears Mr Genta’s signature on the caseback’s frame.

A Maestro of Opulence:

The Unique GC58

The GC58 is a unique iteration of the Maestro, enhancing the original design with luxurious details and refined elegance. Its gold case is accented by a diamond-adorned bezel, while the dial features a hobnail-patterned center and a golden-framed date display at 6 o’clock. Gold-framed oval indices with red inlays and a single golden numeral at 12 o’clock, along with a grey minute track and silvery faceted hands, create a striking visual harmony. Finished with a closed caseback bearing Mr Genta’s signature and a black crocodile strap, the GC58 is a testament to opulent craftsmanship and timeless sophistication.

Bespoke Creations

and Playful Shapes from 2011 to 2018

A Legacy Etched in Time: Mr Genta’s Artistic Style and Impact

Mr Genta’s passing in 2011 marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for Gerald Charles. Renowned for his avant-garde designs, Mr Genta was a master of turning unconventional ideas into tangible, three-dimensional art. His creations often challenged traditional watchmaking norms, introducing asymmetry, unique shapes, and pioneering combinations of finishes. Known as ‘The Picasso of Watches,’ his work redefined perceptions of luxury timepieces, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

The Round 44 collection, introduced in the early 2000s, is a striking example of Genta’s play with shapes. While its round case shape might seem conventional at first glance, the iconic smile at 6 o’clock transforms it into something unmistakably Genta. This design innovation created a perfect space for high-end complications, from Sliding Hours and Chronographs to Perpetual Calendars. As an evolution of the Renaissance design, the Round 44 embodies Genta’s unique ability to blend traditional forms with unexpected twists, demonstrating his artistic flair and technical ingenuity.

Among its standout pieces are the manual-winding Round 44 Tourbillon Pink Gold GC1 with a 44 mm signed pink-gold case and mother-of-pearl dial, a collaboration between Genta and master watchmaker Antoine Preziuso in 2004, and the Round 44 A-Evolution GC22 from 2004. The latter offers a modern aesthetic with a steel case, a sliding hour complication and a dial combining white mother-of-pearl and vibrant lapis lazuli or other exquisite stones. Both timepieces demonstrate Genta’s ability to harmonize tradition with groundbreaking design.

Gerald Charles Maestro case with gem setting.

Mr Genta’s artistic process was as remarkable as his designs – he sketched by hand, often on napkins during meals, transforming spontaneous ideas into masterpieces of design and engineering. From gem-studded bezels to intricate guilloché dials, his attention to craftsmanship was uncompromising. The challenges of incorporating diamonds into the delicate hands of the Star Lady collection or setting gems onto the irregular curves of the Maestro case showcased his relentless pursuit of perfection.

Due to his strong bond, Mr Genta entrusted the Ziviani family with his legacy. This included a vast archive of original drawings from his final 11 years, ensuring his visionary designs continued to inspire. During the years that followed, Gerald Charles focused on producing bespoke timepieces for a niche of collectors, with some bearing Mr Genta’s signature engraved on their case backs. These unique creations, along with archival pieces, remain on display in the brand’s Geneva atelier, offering a testament to Genta’s unparalleled creativity and enduring influence on watchmaking.

Bridging Past and Present:

The Sarawak

One of the timepieces conceived during Mr Genta’s lifetime and that continues to shape Gerald Charles’ identity today is the Sarawak, a bespoke masterpiece designed in 2007 for the royal family of Sarawak, a Malaysian state. This extraordinary creation, adorned with over 15 carats of baguette-cut rubies and diamonds and featuring Genta’s first and only integrated, asymmetrical bracelet, epitomizes his unparalleled artistry and technical brilliance.

Rediscovered within the company’s archives, the Sarawak’s original sketch directly inspired the Masterlink – a modern Gerald Charles icon celebrated for its ultra-slim profile and exceptional comfort. This seamless connection between Genta’s visionary designs and the brand’s present innovations underscores the enduring legacy he entrusted to Gerald Charles – a legacy that continues to evolve under the leadership of Federico Ziviani while honoring Genta’s creative spirit. Let’s explore how the brand has continued to innovate and evolve in recent years while staying true to its heritage.

A New Era of

Gerald Charles

Stepping into Giampaolo’s shoes, Federico Ziviani assumed the role of CEO at Gerald Charles with a clear mission in 2019 at the age of 23 years: to honor the legacy of the Maison while projecting it into a vibrant future. This new era has already been marked by numerous milestones. Guided by his vision to respect the brand’s heritage and reimagine it for modern collectors, the brand began a global retail expansion in 2022, gaining the support of esteemed retailers across Europe and the Middle East. The following year saw his father Franco Ziviani join as Chairman, further strengthening the company’s leadership.

As a breath of fresh air, Federico Ziviani’s strategy centers on maintaining the avant-garde spirit of Mr Genta while creating timepieces that seamlessly blend tradition with innovation. Each watch embodies Genta’s ethos of ergonomic elegance and timeless versatility, delivering uncompromising quality and precision. With the opening of the Gerald Charles Atelier in Geneva in 2024, collectors and enthusiasts can enjoy a physical and cultural hub where they can connect with the brand’s rich history.

Furthermore, impactful collections like the Maestro and Masterlink, have come to life under this young leadership. By remaining product-driven rather than trend-focused, Ziviani ensures that every timepiece reflects the Maison’s commitment to excellence, bridging Genta’s visionary past with a future shaped by timeless elegance and enduring innovation.

Defining the Essence of Gerald Charles:

The Maestro and Masterlink Collections

Gerald Charles’ latest creations are staying true to Mr Genta’s vision of versatile timepieces. Each watch meets rigorous standards, including 10 ATM water resistance and 5G shock resistance, ensuring suitability for both daily wear and intense activity. Swiss Manufacture calibers, such as the 2.0 caliber in the GC Sport, are engineered for durability, featuring strengthened components and calibrated rotors to prevent overwinding during high-impact movements. These robust, hand-finished movements also provide a 50-hour power reserve.

Aesthetic innovation remains key, with distinctive dials showcasing sunburst finishes, gem-set designs, and hexagonal oscillating weights adorned with a honeycomb motif inspired by Roman Baroque architecture. Gerald Charles continues to define modern luxury by delivering timepieces that are as versatile, enduring and comfortable to wear as they are elegant with the Maestro and Masterlink collections at its core.

The Maestro represents bold, avant-garde watchmaking, featuring an experimental case with integrated lugs and serving as the home for grand complications. In contrast, the Masterlink focuses on offering thin, poetic, and understated luxury in a 38 mm x 38 mm case that wears like 40 mm. Together, these collections showcase Gerald Charles’ unique design philosophy, guided by the head of the creative team Octavio Garcia, former head designer at Audemars Piguet.

Reimagined for the 20th Anniversary:

The Maestro and Masterlink Collections

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Gerald Charles launched the Maestro collection, a modern reimagination of the original model introduced in 2005. As one of Mr Genta’s final designs, the Maestro draws inspiration from Roman Baroque architecture. Its iconic case – with its unique shape and unmistakable ‘smile’ at 6 o’clock – remains a timeless symbol of joyful design. In its modern iterations, the Maestro collection features refined materials like medical-grade stainless steel, 18K rose gold, and Grade 5 titanium, all meticulously finished with a mix of polished and sandblasted textures. Its signature sunburst dials, available in striking shades like Royal Blue, Emerald Green, and Brown Chocolate, are crafted through a process of layering and engraving, creating a vibrant interplay of light and texture. Beyond aesthetics, the Maestro integrates an array of complications, from ultra-thin skeleton movements to gem-set models and is a testament to Gerald Charles’ ongoing legacy of excellence. The timepieces are assembled by hand and have to pass demanding in-house quality controls.

Following the Maestro Anniversary and Maestro GC20, Gerald Charles introduced two significant additions to the Maestro collection in 2021: the Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin and the Maestro 3.0 Chronograph Premier. The Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin is powered by the Swiss Manufacture 2.0 caliber, a mere 3.7 mm thick, featuring date and time functions, exceptional accuracy, vibration resistance, and a double-barrel system. Its bridges are adorned with traditional Côtes de Genève, colimaçon, and perlage finishings, reflecting the Maison’s commitment to fine watchmaking. The Maestro 3.0 Chronograph, on the other hand, houses the Swiss Manufacture 3.0 caliber, an automatic chronograph movement with a height of just 6.07 mm, offering applied counters for seconds, minutes, and hours, and combining technical sophistication with elegant design.

Introduction Masterlink

Collection (2024)

Launched in 2024, the Masterlink has established itself as one of the two beating hearts of the Maison’s while also being the thinnest among all the Gerald Charles watches with a case height of just 7.99 mm. Drawing inspiration from the last integrated asymmetric bracelet designed by Mr Genta in 2007, this collection represents an evolution of his Sarawak design. The Masterlink bridges past and future with its distinctive aesthetic and innovative mechanics, blending the iconic asymmetry of the Maestro case with a squarer profile and an integrated stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet’s asymmetrical design echoes the fluid curves of the case at 6 o’clock, while incorporating geometrical elements and a mix of polished and satin finishes for a refined industrial look. The bold double-layered dial, with its sunburst base and vertical stripes in blue and silver, is a hallmark of the collection, ensuring both elegance and readability. Moreover, the indexes, skeletonised baton-shaped hands and minute markers have been redesigned and filled with Super-LumiNova to ensure legibility.

At the heart of the Masterlink is the proprietary Swiss Manufacture 1.0 caliber. This ultra-thin movement, with a remarkable thinness of only 2.7 mm, has especially been developed for this model and features a decentered, sandblasted and sunburst-embellished micro-rotor that combines exceptional precision with a sleek design. Decorated with vertical Côtes de Genève and a brushed snailturn pattern, the movement is as visually striking as it is technically advanced. A 50-hour power reserve and 5G shock resistance make this timepiece as reliable as it is beautiful. The open caseback offers a glimpse into the intricacies of its inner workings, showcasing Gerald Charles’ commitment to craftsmanship and innovation.

The Masterlink collection encapsulates the Maison’s values of legacy, versatility, and artistry, forging a future legacy that remains true to the visionary spirit of Mr Genta. Its debut reaffirmed Gerald Charles’ dedication to reinterpreting classic designs with a modern perspective, creating timepieces that are as timeless as they are innovative.

GC9.0-A-RT-WG, features a hand-hammered 18K white gold dial, alloyed with palladium, creating a refined and textured surface unique to each piece. The signature smiling case is crafted from 316L stainless steel with a blue titanium bezel treated with Colormix for enhanced durability and aesthetic appeal. A hand-stitched blue alligator strap completes its elegant yet sporty design.

Technically sophisticated, the watch houses the Swiss Manufacture 9.0 caliber, an automatic flying tourbillon movement with a skeletonized cage shaped as the GC logo, which also functions as a seconds indicator. The movement boasts a 50-hour power reserve, 4Hz frequency, and meticulous finishing with Côtes de Genève and perlage. With 10 ATM water resistance, 5G shock resistance, and impeccable craftsmanship, this timepiece combines modern innovation with a timeless homage to Genta’s legacy.
