The new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” celebrates the long-standing partnership between IWC Schaffhausen and the Mercedes-AMG sports car brand. The watch comes with a titanium case and features a carbon dial, a material that AMG uses for its vehicles. In addition, an AMG logo adorns the sapphire crystal caseback. The latter reveals the calibre 69385, which offers a chronograph as well as a weekday and date display.
The Partnership between IWC and Mercedes-AMG
The partnership between IWC and AMG is based on shared values such as the pursuit of the highest quality and performance. The ongoing cooperation, which began in 2004, has resulted in special limited editions such as the IWC Ingenieur Automatic Edition AMG GT. Conversely, IWC manufactures the analogue watches that are installed in Mercedes-AMG models. Now, in 2021, the partnership will be given a permanent place in the watch manufacturer’s collection with the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG”.
Case and Materials of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG”
The case measures 43 x 14.9 mm and, thanks to the use of Grade 5 titanium, achieves a matt grey finish reminiscent of AMG’s Selenite Grey Magno paint finish. In fact, this special model is the first Pilot’s Watch Chronograph from IWC with a titanium case. Apart from the material, the case of the Edition “AMG” follows the lines of the original. On the back, however, there is another reference to the partnership with AMG. Here, the logo of the sports car brand is featured on the tinted sapphire crystal. In addition, IWC engraves the water-resistance rating of 6 bar on the caseback.
Carbon dial
The dial of the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” consists of carbon fibre – a material that is also frequently found in sports cars. By applying heat and pressure the carbon strands become light yet stiff. A weaving machine then processes the material into textile structures, which gives the end product its typical look. IWC contrasts this with silver subdials, which are reminiscent of the instruments in cars. The watch indicates the time with black hands with white luminous material.
The Movement of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG”
Inside the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” is the in-house calibre 69385, which consists of 231 parts and 33 jewels. The movement offers automatic winding and a power reserve of 46 hours. It also integrates a chronograph that can be used for measurements up to 12 hours. In addition, a column wheel controls the mechanism, which makes it more comfortable to use. Last but not least, the watch also displays the day of the week and the date on the dial.
Strap, Availability, and Price
The watch appears on a black calfskin strap, which picks up on the look of the dial. Meanwhile, a folding clasp secures the watch on the wrist. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” can be pre-ordered from 21 May at www.IWC.com, IWC boutiques and authorised dealers. The price is 9,800 euros.
