In addition to a redesigned Submariner and new Oyster Perpetual models, Rolex is also introducing a new version of the Sky-Dweller with an Oysterflex bracelet. Previously only “professional” models such as the Rolex Daytona and Yacht-Master were available with this bracelet, which is made of metal blades covered with elastomer. The new combination is reserved for models with gold casing.
The Sky-Dweller
The Rolex Sky-Dweller is the most complicated watch from Rolex. It combines a second time zone in 24-hour format with an annual calendar that can distinguish between months with 31 days and months with 30 days. The movement is housed in a 42 x 14 mm case in 18-carat yellow or Everose gold (a mixture of gold, platinum and copper).
One special feature is the annual calendar: the months are displayed in twelve viewing windows on the outer edge of the dial – the current month appears in red. For example, if the window is filled with red at 8 o’clock, this means August, the eighth month of the year. In addition, there is a date at 3 o’clock corresponding to local time, indicated by the central hands.
The calibre 9001, developed and manufactured in-house, drives the Rolex Sky-Dweller. The new models with Oysterflex bracelet, launched in September 2020, do not differ in this respect from the other versions of the Sky-Dweller. Nevertheless, the highly complex movement combines a second time zone with an annual calendar, and features automatic winding as well as a 72-hour power reserve.
The Oysterflex bracelet – which looks like a strap – consists of two metal sheets covered with black elastomer. This way, it can combine the robustness of steel bracelets with the wearing comfort of rubber bands. The gold Oysterclasp deployment buckle secures the Rolex Sky-Dweller with Oysterflex bracelet to the wrist. The Glidelock extension system allows the bracelet to be quickly extended or shortened.
The six new variants of Rolex Sky-Dweller with Oysterflex bracelet will be available from September 2, 2020. The price is 36,400 euros for the yellow gold case, or 37,800 euros for the Everose gold version.
