Cartier Santos de Cartier ADLC and Santos-Dumont XL
Cartier has introduced its newest addition to the Santos-Dumont collection. The new Cartier Santos-Dumont XL uses a mechanical movement – a first for the otherwise quartz-powered collection. Additionally, the watch’s case measures 46.6 mm x 33.9 mm – making it the largest model in the line. The watch is available in three different case variations. Elsewhere, Cartier also presents the Santos de Cartier ADLC. The case is covered with ADLC (amorphous diamond-like carbon), making its colour a sultry black.
Cartier Santos-Dumont XL
The Cartier Santos-Dumont XL carries the line’s hallmark features, paying homage to the original Santos that first went into production in 1911. These characteristics include a beaded winding crown set with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon, plus Cartier’s blue sword-shaped hour and minute hands. Additionally, the Cartier Santos-Dumont XL showcases exposed screws on the bezel. This feature was first introduced by the brand over a century ago. As ever, the square dial displays the line’s Roman numeral indices.
Santos-Dumont watches are generally quartz-powered. However, thanks to the thicker case size, the Cartier Santos-Dumont XL incorporates the ultra-thin, manual-winding 430 MC calibre. The mechanical movement is a modified version of the Piaget 430 P. It offers a power reserve of 38 hours.
There are three versions of the Cartier Santos-Dumont XL available. The first iteration is the 18-carat pink gold edition with a grey leather alligator strap (14,900 euros). Secondly, there is the 18-carat pink gold and steel with a black leather alligator strap (7,750 euros). Thirdly, a steel version with a navy leather alligator strap is available (5,600 euros).
Santos de Cartier ADLC
Meanwhile, the Santos de Cartier ADLC provides a brand new interpretation of the historic Santos. Two case variations are available: steel with a ADLC-coated bezel, or entirely covered in ADLC. The model showcases a satin-finish bezel and uses Super-LumiNova for round-the-clock legibility. Additionally, the exposed screws appear not only on the bezel, but also on the rubber strap or steel bracelet. A leather strap is also available. Cartier uses the QuickSwitch system to ensure that the wearer can effortlessly alternate their strap or bracelet. Furthermore, its patented SmartLink system means that links can easily be removed.
Cartier’s movement 1847 MC powers the watch. The self-winding calibre provides central seconds and a date. The movement has a frequency of 4 Hz and a 42-hour power reserve. Additionally, the movement is anti-magnetic thanks to nickel phosphorus components in the escapement.
Like all Santos models today, the watch is water-resistant to 100 m. The watch comes either with both a leather and rubber strap, or a steel bracelet. The steel version with a ADLC-covered bezel (Ref. CRWSSA0037) costs 7,400 euros (with a steel bracelet). Meanwhile, the entirely ADLC-covered version (CRWSSA0039) costs 7,650 euros.
