W&W 2020: IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 and Portugieser Automatic
IWC Schaffhausen is extending its Portugieser collection by introducing the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Automatic 40. The model bases itself on the well-known design of the Ref. 325 from the 1930s. Therefore, the small seconds are placed at 6 o’clock. Furthermore, the case is only available in 40 mm. Additionally, IWC is introducing two new 42 mm versions of the Portugieser Automatic. One of these is being sold as a Boutique Edition.
Portugieser Automatic 40
Ever since 1939, when IWC sold its first ever Portugieser, many of the models have featured the same design. Fundamentally, this includes an open dial and small seconds at 6 o’clock. Models that stay true to the design include the likes of the Portugieser Minute Repeater (Ref. 5240) and the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days (Ref. 5102). Now, the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Automatic 40 is bringing back the classic 40 mm design once more. Although the watch is based on older models, it is equipped with modern technology.
Powering the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Automatic 40 is the in-house calibre 82200. The automatic movement features a Pellaton winding mechanism. Some parts are made with ceramic, helping to reduce abrasion. Additionally, the mainspring barrel provides a 60-hour power reserve. The stop seconds allow for the price to be set precisely. Finally, the movement can be viewed thanks to the sapphire crystal caseback.
The IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Automatic 40 is water-resistant to 30 m. Three variations are available in stainless steel. These models In addition, an 18-carat 5N gold case is also available.
Ref. IW358303: Stainless steel case, silver-plated dial,
gold-plated hands and appliques, black alligator leather strap.
Ref. IW358304: Stainless steel case, silver-plated dial, blue hands and appliques, blue alligator leather strap.
Ref. IW358305: Stainless steel case, blue dial, rhodium-plated hands and appliques, black alligator leather strap.
Ref. IW500713BoutiqueEdition: 18-carat 5N gold case, blue dial, gold-plated hands, 18-carat gold appliques, blue alligator leather strap.
Ref. IW500714: Stainless steel case, burgundy dial, rhodium-plated hands and appliques, black alligator leather strap.
Both watches are powered by the IWC-manufactured 52010 calibre, which features the IWC specific Pellaton winding system using components of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. Thanks to its slightly larger dimensions, the movement has room for two barrels that build up a power reserve of seven days. In this model too, the decorated movement is visible through a transparent sapphire glass back.
PRICE: The steel Portugieser Automatic Ref. IW358303, Ref. IW358304, and Ref. IW358305 are priced at 7,200 euros. The gold version (Ref. IW358306) is priced at 16,700 euros.
