Roger Dubuis to introduce a pioneering novelty at a never seen before venue
A famous Italian track near Sant’Agata Bolognese (not far from the Lamborghini headquarter) had been temporarily closed for us to be able to enjoy the adrenaline rush of some Lamborghini super cars (Huracán Performante and Aventador S)! But not enough – the gala dinner afterwards was held right in the middle of the production lines of Lamborghini! Once again we experienced a journey for a long time to remember.

The special occasion for this adventures rendezvous in North-Italy was Roger Dubuis and Lamborghinis novelty presentation resulting from their new collaboration: the Excalibur Aventador S. A watch which calibre is inspired by the Aventador S engine and the brand-new Huracán Super Trofeo EVO. Surely one of the best Italian performance car brands and a pioneer at the forefront of contemporary Swiss Haute Horlogerie have teamed up and shared all their individual skills in design and technology for a quite unique watch.

The resulting two models not only feature materials that are used for Lamborghini cars, but they also implemented visual elements from the engine! For the first time ever a multi-layered carbon and C-SMC carbon has been used on the orange-liveried watch (limited to 8 pieces).

Gravity Compensation System
One feature we want to point out especially: We would gently call Roger Dubuis a gravity hunter. A few years ago the brand introduced the Quatuor – equipped with four spiral balances and five differentials in one watch to minimize accuracy loss caused by gravity. The new Excalibur Aventador S has a Duotor which has been developed for this series exclusively. It’s simply the smaller version of the Quatuor, but with the same power! It is a world premiere, patented by Roger Dubuis and able to work more efficient then a tourbillon complication! With it’s four spiral balances and five differentials it runs with a frequency of 4×4 Hz (115’200 vph). The result: it makes this movement more precise and with an almost instant correction. It only takes a blink to compensate the speed fluctuations caused by gravity – for what a tourbillon needs one whole minute! That’s a striking achievement.

Just like the longitudinal placement of the Lamborghini engines tailored to the design of the streamlined car itself, the calibre has been shaped that same way. To enhance this view, the double balance wheel is inclined at a similar angle, supported and highlighted by holders shaped like triangular wheel suspension assemblies (see the picture).

To make it all more visible, it is easiest to see the similarities between car engine and watch calibre in our pictures: double triangle strut bars (picture left), engine cover décor (picture in the middle), differentials (picture right).

From spring 2018 onwards, Roger Dubuis will become one of the main sponsors of Lamborghini Super Trofeo (the legendary Lamborghini one-make series). Next to the Roger Dubuis new Excalibur Aventador S, Lamborghini’s brand-new Huracán Super Trofeo EVO (V10 engine, 620 hp) will hit the track.

Since its establishment in 1972, Porsche Design’s watch collection has been steadily growing. The 1919 Collection, which was first introduced in 2015, is dedicated to the Porsche car series. This year, the new collection is inspired by the famous 911 series that Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed 54 years ago! The design and technology of…
The Swiss watch manufacture celebrated a summer festival of superlatives on the trendy Mediterranean island of Mykonos. This summer, Omega celebrated 75 years of the Seamaster, honouring the anniversary of the model with the introduction of no fewer than eleven new timepieces. With each and every piece coming in a distinctive shade of blue, the watches…
Bronze was the first alloy to ever be used by humans. It was discovered in the Middle East around 3500 BC, hence the name that ensued soon after: the 'Bronze Age'. It seems that in the watch world at least, the Bronze Age is back (albeit without the pirates and invasions by nomadic tribes). There…
If the name Singer sounds familiar to you, you probably know it from the Singer Vehicle Design, the brand that restores Porsche 911 sportscars to perfection. Of course there are also the nostalgic Singer sewing machines we have in mind, but they have nothing in common. Rob Dickinson is the founder and creative director of…
When Zenith presented a diver's watch at Watches & Wonders in April this year, my first assumption was that the brand wanted to expand its range, which is quite logical. After all, diver's watches – at least their mostly strikingly masculine design elements – have been in demand amongst watch enthusiasts for decades, fuelled not…
The watch industry has something of a penchant for superlatives, but it would be no exaggeration to say that this is, in many ways, the most exciting new product of the year: the Patek Philippe Cubitus. For the manufacture, it is the first new watch collection in a quarter of a century – the predecessor…
How a Rolex, Zenith and Ressence proved to be the right watches for braving the eternal ice. Our author was faced with this question: Which timepieces to take to an Antarctic journey? ‘There is no law south of the 50th latitude – and there is no god south of the 60th latitude’, seafarers used to…
As a somewhat seasoned purveyor of the watch industry by now, I would personally assert that Vacheron Constantin’s Les Cabinotiers is one of the absolute highest watchmaking departments on the planet. Over the years, the Swiss horology house’s unique creations division has produced some of the most complex watches of all time, blending groundbreaking horological…
Forays into the fashion world are an increasingly prevalent – yet often vehemently contested – occurrence in the Swiss watch community. Comments on various horology sites vary from ‘Do you even know your audience?’ and ‘In what way do you think collectors can possibly relate to this?’, to ‘What happened to exclusivity?’ Wait – what…
Under the leadership of co-founders Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, Louis Vuitton’s La Fabrique du Temps is steadily establishing itself as a serious contender in the realm of haute horlogerie – despite being little more than a decade old. Today, the manufacture not only produces its own movements, but also undertakes intricate and rare decorative…
With the help of a sophisticated marketing concept and innovative technologies, Richard Mille has set out to shake up the watch industry. Since the company was founded in 1999, the brand has set itself the goal of uniting top-quality craftsmanship and futuristic watch design, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of technical innovation. It all began…
At the beginning of 2025, Hublot revised its striking Big Bang MECA-10, a timepiece renowned for its ten-day power reserve and unconventional power reserve display. The primary focus of this update was a reduction in size, from a bold 45 mm to a more restrained 42 mm in diameter. Achieving this required the development of…
In Italy, la mia famiglia is the most important thing in life – food is a close second. Powerful blood lines such as the Florentine Medici and Roman Orsini families have historically dominated art, religion and politics across the centuries. Even today, generations of Italian families are woven together by strong emotional connections and infallible support networks. The Italian Swiss manufacture…
