Liaison Between Tradition And Modernity – The New AkriviA ‘Rexhep Rexhepi’ Chronométre Contemporain
For the 6th anniversary of the young independent watchmaking atelier AkriviA, founder and master watchmaker Rexhep Rexhepi wished to present something completely new. So far, most of his watches are from the inside and outside wholly complex. Tourbillon complications became his passion.
The Chronomètre Contemporain, inspired by officers watches is a long-awaited dream come true for master watchmaker Rexhep Rexhepi
However, he has always been deeply inspired by officer’s pocket-watches of the 1940s. They are distinctive for their clean and elegant lines, accuracy and clear readability. With this in mind, Rexhep developed the Chronomètre Contemporain (available in platinum with white enamel dial, or roségold with black enamel dial) and signed it with his own name, to differentiate it from the existing style of watches created under the AkriviA name. He describes it as the “epitome of the classical round watch, reinvented for the 21st century”.
Not a very AkriviA typical, but a very aesthetic dresswatch
We really were excited to discover this new watch as it differs so much from his usual style of watchmaking. But we soon realized that the simplicity of the visual facade of the Chronomètre Contemporain is mingled with Rexheps passion for complexity. It is not just that single barrel 3-hand movement you would expect – instead it is equipped with the RR-01 in-house movement offering a 100-hour power reserve, a hacking seconds and automatic zero-seconds reset function. This leads to an accurate setting because the second hand resets back to 12 o’clock when pulling out the crown to set the time. The stop seconds mechanism has been developed from the ‘all or nothing’ function used in the Grande Sonnerie where the mechanism must release either completely or not at all, using one motion.
The watch stands under the signet of Rexhep Rexhepi – the atelier’s name ‘AkriviA’ is only visible on the caseback of the watch
One must experience and wear the watch in real life to understand it’s great comfort and the cut between past and contemporary watchmaking. The enamel dial is traditionally handmade in white or black Grand Feu. However, the dial lettering (numbers, scales, logos, etc.) was probably applied afterwards and not, as is typical for traditional Grand Feu enamel, applied with enamel colours and fired at high temperatures, which makes the manufacturing process considerably more complex. The asymmetrical gold or blue lines are Art Deco inspired and the large diameter of the sub-seconds counter at 6 o’clock is a tribute to the officer’s watch from past times. The new case shows some concave and convex details visible in the case sides and lugs. Rexhep has also given special attention to the strap to match the fine lugs allowing a very comfortable wear for large and small wrists.
The dial is available with white or black grand feu enamel
Rexheps fingerprints are hidden in the movement. His respect for traditional finishing techniques such as anglage, black polish and Côtes de Genève are also characteristics of the RR-01 in-house movement. For the first time, you will find the watchmakers name ‘Rexhep Rexhepi’ on the dial of the watch. The atelier name ‘AkriviA’ is only visible on the backside of the case. This is a confident statement for such a young watchmaker. We are curious about his next coup.
It has recently become quite obvious throughout the watch industry that many brands dig deep in their archives and recall on their heritage. But why does everyone seem to wallow in memory of the old times? It is probably just an instinctively reaction in times of change, and without doubt the watch industry – just…
Those who know me know that I have another great passion besides mechanical watches; tennis. For me, there is no more perfect tennis player in my generation than Roger Federer, because his game is unrivalled in elegance. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, his two greatest opponents, are certainly just as remarkable in terms of sporting…
In 2011, Cartier acquired a 17th century farmhouse a stone’s throw away from its watch manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds, lovingly renovated it, and created an atelier in which the maison prioritises traditional craftsmanship. The renovation work was completed in 2014; gem-setters and enamellers promptly moved in to bring the maison's most breathtaking creations to life,…
According to company documents, Thierry Stern, Patek Philippe president still today tests all minute repeaters himself before they leave the manufacture. And to Stern, it’s not work but pure passion and pleasure. Patek Philippe has gained a special reputation in this field, not least by showing their savoir-faire with the ‘Grandmaster Chime’ from 2014 with…
Talking about Breguet, if you only have extravagant, skeletonized and hand-guilloched pieces of art with sophisticated complications in mind, you should take yourself the time to dive deeper into the history of the Maison. This is deliberately meant to be understood in a double sense, because it’s the ‘Marine’ collection that is pretty much distinctive…
Audemars Piguet dropped some crazy new Royal Oaks this month, and whilst they did take the spotlight, there were other releases too. Seven new watches were added to the Code 11.59 collection, which this year celebrates its fifth anniversary. Over the last five years, AP has been slowly refining the Code 11.59 collection by playing with a number of different variables,…
Shortly before his untimely death, pop art icon Andy Warhol created a painting of three timepieces with a rectangle case and a bracelet with horizontal lines on a 111.8 x 111.8 cm canvas. Their colourful outlines diagonally stretch across yellow, mint, black, pink and red areas. The title of the artwork from 1987: Anatom (Rado…
In a feat almost as impressive as Apollo 13, we were able to gather all three legendary OMEGA Snoopy watches together in the same room. We decided to size them up in the metal, from aesthetics and functionality, to the story behind each watch. It's time to focus on three extraordinary things: Space, Snoopy, and…
When John McEnroe and Björn Borg take to the stage at the gala event in Berlin on Thursday evening before the start of the Laver Cup 2024, it will be the last time the two eternal rivals introduce their teams. After seven tournaments since 2017 (the Laver Cup was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid),…
From the picturesque La Côte-aux-Fées with its lush green pastures to the dazzling fashion capital of Paris – within 150 years, the watchmaking workshop founded by Georges-Édourard Piaget on his family’s farm has come a long way. An established institution for haute horlogerie and haute joaillerie, Piaget has been manufacturing countless elaborate pieces for more…
In the world of architecture, there are constructs where you ask yourself, how they can withstand the enormous weight by a seemingly fragile method of construction. A similar example from watchmaking has just been introduced by Breguet with their Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette 5395, where all supporting elements have been reduced so heavily, that they almost seem…
Before we even get into the details of this special edition, it is important to realise that there is hardly any other German watch brand that enjoys such a high level of recognition among watch enthusiasts and non-watch enthusiasts alike as Junghans from the Black Forest. I would argue that, at least among people who…
