Swisswatches Magazine On Tour: the ingenious Armin Strom Watch Configurator
Swisswatches Magazine is always on the go. But in August we started an adventurous journey which took us 17 days, over 7.000 Kilometres through 17 places across Europe. Our luggage: some shorts and some watches! Departure: Munich. Destination: surfers paradise spot Ericeira – just by car and through the beautiful landscapes of Lugano, Portofino and Genua, crossing the French boarder to Monaco, Cannes and Marseille into Spain’s cities of Valencia and Sevilla to Lissabon and Ericeira in Portugal, only to mention some spots.

Some more loyal companions of the journey were three configured watches from Armin Strom. It brings a great smile to our face to see how watch brands are innovative and courageous! Especially when it is something where watch enthusiasts can get their own hands on to it! Configuration might not be an invention – customized products have been available for quite a while – however in the watch industry it is fairly new, let’s say rare! Armin Strom introduces its new Watch Configurator and defines luxury new! For some people luxury is not about the price but about the exclusivity. To own something rare that no one else has.

Armin Strom customers can now choose from six movement types within the collection: Manual, Gravity, Gravity Date, Edge, Skeleton Pure and Tourbillon Skeleton. Having chosen the desired model the collector can pick a personal dial, bridges back, plate, case, gear train, hands, clasp, strap and even the stitches on the strap. Finally you can also add your desired initials.

The online virtual reality versions of the Watch Configurator is made extremely user friendly and it really starts making fun to pick all bits and pieces! With every step you can see in real time what your configured watch looks like and it also updates the price. By the way it is not more expensive then the serial models.

Armin Strom is able to offer such a great feature as they have the ability to create a full watch movement under one roof, therefore possessing the agility to act and react quickly. Time to dig deeper into Armin Strom’s remarkable history, which many might not know! Already in the late 1960s the founder Armin Strom – of whom the company takes its name – started to create his own timepieces. He was a watch specialist with his own store in Burgdorf, Switzerland. Soon Armin Strom specialized in making skeletonized watch movements which still are today the companies flagships within the collections! The company grew steadily over the years and in 2009 Armin Strom (now run by owner Serge Michel and director Claude Greisler) introduced their first in-house calibre (ARM09) and ever since then produces all movements in-house.

Let’s get back to now and the Watch Configurator. Another clever move from Armin Storm is that once you have ordered your individual configured timepiece you can pick it up at the Armin Strom factory in Switzerland and have a free tour around the factory. Customers will automatically build up a different bond to the brand and their watch while experiencing the place where all happens! A wine tastes different when you have been at the winery, met the people who make it and hear their stories. Of course Armin Strom also offers a pick up at a nearby-authorized retailer.

The masterminds behind OMEGA strive to be ahead everyone else. A milestone and watch for which the brand is probably most remembered by is the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, which was the first watch they shot to the moon in 1969. That is nearly 50 years ago. In 2015, OMEGA introduced the world’s first Master…
This technically sophisticated timepiece – equipped with a jumping seconds mechanism, constant-force escapement and zero-reset function – stands out above all for its distinctive dial layout. Reinterpreting the classical regulator design found in historic precision timepieces, the displays are not arranged in a straight line, but instead form a triangle. The prominent seconds sub-dial occupies…
In watchmaking, one of the most supreme disciplines of all is the creation of complex calibres within a height of only a few millimetres. Inspired by a fascination of reducing the size of cases and movements, watchmakers manage to dream up new creations again and again. The flatter the case, the more complex the construction…
As soon as the five starting lights on Boulevard Albert 1er turn green at 3 p.m. on 25 May 2025 and the Formula 1 TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco 2025 begins, they will also mark the beginning of a new era in the watch world at the historic race track. In celebration of the…
Of all the luxury brands out there, Cartier is surely the most resplendent. The Cartier insignia, glowing in gold and set against lavish red, represents decades upon decades of history, jewels, fashion, kings, queens, actresses – and, most importantly for us, watchmaking. Understatement and refinement are important: style is vital. Allow us to paint you…
The peripheral winding rotor is en vogue – and therefore used more and more in the watch industry. The peripheral alignment and space saving rotor enables the movement and hence the case to be slimmer and at the same time offers an unhindered view onto the movement, which so far has been partly covered by…
Since its establishment in 1972, Porsche Design’s watch collection has been steadily growing. The 1919 Collection, which was first introduced in 2015, is dedicated to the Porsche car series. This year, the new collection is inspired by the famous 911 series that Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed 54 years ago! The design and technology of…
As was the case last year, the 2020 CODE 11.59 by Audemars Piguet line breaks numerous boundaries, but everyone knows that when it comes to Audemars Piguet, the line still isn't the star of the show. But does that mean it can't become an iconic part of the watchmaker's portfolio in the future? Audemars Piguet…
‘Belle Haute Horlogerie’ encapsulates what Vacheron Constantin has stood for ever since its founding in 1755: the pursuit of watchmaking in its highest form and the commitment to continually perpetuate the knowledge and know-how gathered by generations of master watchmakers. In its over 250-year history, Vacheron Constantin has unremittingly created not only fine timepieces, but…
The year 2022 was an impressive one for the Swiss watch industry. Exports set a new record of CHF 24.8 billion, an increase of 14% on 2019 figures, and the MoonSwatch embarked upon its unprecedented success story, with more than three million pieces now sold. But what about 2023? Which markets are strongest, which trends…
A trilogy refers to a series of three different works that are linked together and can be considered either as a single work or as three separate works. You could be forgiven for thinking that this is already about the three new watches that the Swiss brand Zenith is presenting at Watches & Wonders 2025…
When it comes to measuring time, standing still is a bad idea. But it's not just the watch itself that should never stand still in the best case scenario - or, in the case of a mechanical watch, provide perfect information again after manual winding or a quick shake of the wrist and setting the…
The fifth LVMH Watch Week, which took place in Miami from January 28 to February 1, was proof of LVMH's ambition to become ever more influential in the watch sector, in which it is now the fourth largest power after Rolex, Richemont and the Swatch Group. To this end, the family-owned business is gearing up…
