Swisswatches Magazine On Tour: the ingenious Armin Strom Watch Configurator
Swisswatches Magazine is always on the go. But in August we started an adventurous journey which took us 17 days, over 7.000 Kilometres through 17 places across Europe. Our luggage: some shorts and some watches! Departure: Munich. Destination: surfers paradise spot Ericeira – just by car and through the beautiful landscapes of Lugano, Portofino and Genua, crossing the French boarder to Monaco, Cannes and Marseille into Spain’s cities of Valencia and Sevilla to Lissabon and Ericeira in Portugal, only to mention some spots.

Some more loyal companions of the journey were three configured watches from Armin Strom. It brings a great smile to our face to see how watch brands are innovative and courageous! Especially when it is something where watch enthusiasts can get their own hands on to it! Configuration might not be an invention – customized products have been available for quite a while – however in the watch industry it is fairly new, let’s say rare! Armin Strom introduces its new Watch Configurator and defines luxury new! For some people luxury is not about the price but about the exclusivity. To own something rare that no one else has.

Armin Strom customers can now choose from six movement types within the collection: Manual, Gravity, Gravity Date, Edge, Skeleton Pure and Tourbillon Skeleton. Having chosen the desired model the collector can pick a personal dial, bridges back, plate, case, gear train, hands, clasp, strap and even the stitches on the strap. Finally you can also add your desired initials.

The online virtual reality versions of the Watch Configurator is made extremely user friendly and it really starts making fun to pick all bits and pieces! With every step you can see in real time what your configured watch looks like and it also updates the price. By the way it is not more expensive then the serial models.

Armin Strom is able to offer such a great feature as they have the ability to create a full watch movement under one roof, therefore possessing the agility to act and react quickly. Time to dig deeper into Armin Strom’s remarkable history, which many might not know! Already in the late 1960s the founder Armin Strom – of whom the company takes its name – started to create his own timepieces. He was a watch specialist with his own store in Burgdorf, Switzerland. Soon Armin Strom specialized in making skeletonized watch movements which still are today the companies flagships within the collections! The company grew steadily over the years and in 2009 Armin Strom (now run by owner Serge Michel and director Claude Greisler) introduced their first in-house calibre (ARM09) and ever since then produces all movements in-house.

Let’s get back to now and the Watch Configurator. Another clever move from Armin Storm is that once you have ordered your individual configured timepiece you can pick it up at the Armin Strom factory in Switzerland and have a free tour around the factory. Customers will automatically build up a different bond to the brand and their watch while experiencing the place where all happens! A wine tastes different when you have been at the winery, met the people who make it and hear their stories. Of course Armin Strom also offers a pick up at a nearby-authorized retailer.

It also features a sapphire dial-ring with gold indices (30.000,- CHF). You don’t instantly need to by a watch, but just try it on Armin Strom Watch Configurator.

The masterminds behind OMEGA strive to be ahead everyone else. A milestone and watch for which the brand is probably most remembered by is the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, which was the first watch they shot to the moon in 1969. That is nearly 50 years ago. In 2015, OMEGA introduced the world’s first Master…
Bulgari and disruptive innovation – do they go together? After speaking with Jonathan Brinbaum from Bulgari at Watches & Wonders 2025, I believe they absolutely do. Add a touch of dolce vita and Italian elegance, and the picture becomes complete. Founded in Rome in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, the brand – now part…
Swisswatches attended the launch of the new TUDOR Ranger in London back in July, and it was everything you’d hope for: ambassador David Beckham enthused about the tale behind the watch, guests drank smoothies out of ice cubes, and an Oxford scientist spoke enthusiastically about the importance of the British North Greenland Expedition. Since the…
Surely no horology house has ever entered into the vintage watch business in such a charming way: Jaeger-LeCoultre is introducing The Collectibles, a watch 'Bible' featuring its 17 most important models, dedicated primarily to the manufacture's collectors. But that's not all. Behind The Collectibles is another idea: offering up watch enthusiasts a carefully curated selection…
It has recently become quite obvious throughout the watch industry that many brands dig deep in their archives and recall on their heritage. But why does everyone seem to wallow in memory of the old times? It is probably just an instinctively reaction in times of change, and without doubt the watch industry – just…
When Omega was first appointed as the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee in 1932, a lone watchmaker travelled from Biel to Los Angeles with 30 split-second chronographs to measure the times of the 1,334 participating athletes. Over 90 years and 30 Olympic Games later, Omega is heading to Paris…
The watch brand Panerai experienced an enormous upswing in the past 20 years. Many don’t know that the Florentine brand was already established in 1887 and produces wristwatches since 1936, although in the beginning only for the Italian navy. In particular combat divers relied on the tough watches that needed to withstand the water pressure…
In 2011, Cartier acquired a 17th century farmhouse a stone’s throw away from its watch manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds, lovingly renovated it, and created an atelier in which the maison prioritises traditional craftsmanship. The renovation work was completed in 2014; gem-setters and enamellers promptly moved in to bring the maison's most breathtaking creations to life,…
Were you aware that Richard Mille has its own Certified Pre-Owned boutique in the heart of London? More often than not, the answer to this question, regrettably, is ‘no’. Always ones to keep our noses to the ground, we at Swisswatches were keen to visit this elusive yet highly impressive store, where a certain specialist…
Louis Vuitton and Geneva-based watchmaker Akrivia surprised the watch world with their recently announced collaboration that resulted in the majestic LVRR-01 Chronographe à Sonnerie. You can find a detailed report on the timepiece and the collaboration between the two brands here. In the run-up to the event, we had the opportunity to speak personally with…
It's fair to say that across the Swiss watch industry, it is men's and unisex watches that tend to be the most technically interesting. A timepiece that breaks this trend, however, is Van Cleef's Lady Arpels Heures Florales. Charmingly beautiful on the surface, this watch is in fact a horological masterpiece. Van Cleef & Arpels’…
As an author who has spent over twenty years writing about mechanical wristwatches, being tucked away for two hours in a shadowy wine cellar in Cologne’s old town with thirty potential watch clients is truly exciting. It’s not just the rare wines they savoured together – including a Bordeaux from 1988 – but the open…
Originally introduced as part of Omega’s legendary toolwatch trilogy alongside the Speedmaster and Seamaster 300, the Railmaster was intended to rival the Rolex Milgauss. Yet, it never truly caught on and was discontinued after only six years in production. Nevertheless, the Railmaster is a watch that uniquely combines significant historical relevance with a harmonious design…
