SIHH 2019: Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa – PAM01039
On the Geneva watch fair SIHH 2019 Panerai presented a new model, inspired by sailboat racing. The Submersible Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01039) is part of a new collection, which is released in the celebration of the sponsorship of the Italian brand for their compatriots in the sailing team Luna Rossa.
A few months ago, the Italian ‘Challenger of Record’ dared the defender from New Zealand as the first team ever to compete in the 36th edition of the ‘America’s Cup’. To honor this triumph Panerai dedicates a new watch collection to the team: the Panerai Luna Rossa Challenger. Besides the Prada Group and Pirelli, Panerai is the official sponsor of the team.
The new collection though is not only dedicated to sailing, but also inspired by it. For the production of the watches Panerai used technologies and materials, that also play an important role in the production of the sailing yachts of the competitors in the ‘America’s Cup’. The case of the Submersible Luna Rossa is made of carbon fibre, just like the hull of the Luna Rossa. The dial is made of the same material as the sails of the boat.

The Submersible Luna Rossa is water-resistant to a depth of 300 meters or 30 bar with a case made of carbotech, a material based on carbon fibre. Due to its lightness, resistance to external shocks and freedom from corrosion, carbon fibre material is also used to make the AC75 monohull. The picture of which is engraved on the titanium back of the watch, together with the Luna Rossa logo and the ‘America’s Cup’ profile.
The striated matt black appearance of the case with a diameter of 47 mm results from the particular arrangement of the carbon fibres. The unidirectional rotating bezel and the dial are also made of carbotech. On the dial of the model pieces of the sails of the Luna Rossa are applied. The indications on the dial are clearly visible, as well underwater. Several further details, like the small seconds hand at 9 o’clock and the central hand indicating the second time zone give a clear overview due to their red colour.
The new Submersible Luna Rossa is fitted with the P.9010/GMT Manufacture movement, which is automatic with a bidirectional oscillating weight and two spring barrels, providing a power reserve of three days. The watch is displaying the duration of a dive, has a second time zone, a date window at 3 o’clock and a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. It is supplied with a light and waterproof black rubber strap, with a brushed titanium buckle.
To honor the explorer Mike Horn, Panerai created the new Submersible Mike Horn Edition, introduced at SIHH watch fair 2019. The watch is upon other terms water resistant to a depth of 300 m or 30 bar. Mike Horn is someone, whose heart beats for nature and its protection. Therefore Panerai was interested in using innovative methods…
