IWC Special Edition to Celebrate Mercedes-AMG 50th Anniversary
A childhood dream has come true. Thanks to Mercedes-AMG and IWC Schaffhausen who teamed up at the Nürburgring 24-hours race to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the performance sports car brand of Mercedes-Benz, which took it’s name from the initials of the founders Hans Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melcher and the town where it all began, Großaspach (Stuttgart) – AMG.
IWC Special Edition Mercedes AMG 50th Anniversary
IWC and Mercedes-AMG have already started their first collaboration in 2004 and every since then bring happiness to men with passion for strong performance cars and mechanical watches. It really is something different to watch a car race like this in TV or acutally being there, right on the track, hearing the deafening sound of these monster engines, inhaling the sharp smell of petrol, hot oil and smoking breaks and feeling the heat of the race. We believe the north loop track known as the “Green Hell” has deserved its name. We not only discovered the new IWC anniversary timepiece but also had the chance to test-drive some incredible cars which experience we share with you on attached videos & pictures.

How do cars and watches fit together?
Well, first of all, back in the days the tachymeter scale on the watch was used to define the speed of a car – before the technical revolution. With this technique a driver was able to calculate the speed by stopping the time within a certain distance. But besides all the technical advantages, cars and watches combine precision engineering with exclusive design, which simply fascinates. IWC has already launched various Mercedes-AMG special editions with features such as a case material like black zirconium oxide ceramic, inspired by high performance cars.
IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition 50 years Mercedes AMG
For the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG the manufacture from Schaffhausen has produced a limited edition of 250 “Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition – 50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG -” timepieces (Ref: IW380902) which was presented at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring end of May. The watch has some remarkable features. The calibre is IWC’s own manufacture with flyback function. The case is made of titanium and features a soft-iron cage for protection against magnetic fields. This is especially interesting, since IWC developed this technique 1955, when the first Ingenieur collection was launched. At that time, due to the rapid technological developments (radio, TV, calculators etc.), which caused heavy magnetic fields, the precision of mechanical watches was affected. Thanks to a soft iron case developed by IWC, the watch now was protected.
The new IWC Ingenieur collection
The dial design of the IWC timepiece is modelled on the typical colour combinations of racetracks – with red and white for the kerbs and black for the asphalt. However, not only IWC revealed a novelty. Also Mercedes-AMG presented an exclusive special edition of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50 (650 PS), which is limited to five cars. Every buyer of the car will also receive the anniversary watch from IWC. Who does not want to spend 380.000,- Euro can buy the watch at a price of 13.000,- Euro.

Clocks, canons and propellers – we usually know bronze from these engineering heavyweights. And finally, the watch industry celebrates a comeback of this industrial material. What makes Bronze so special is not only it’s toughness, but also that it develops it’s very individual patina over the time by being used. That makes every Bronze watch…
Over a century after the creation of its ultra-complicated Universelle pocket watch, Audemars Piguet is introducing a new interpretation that marks the first ever ultra-complicated self-winding wristwatch, the RD#4, to emerge from the watchmaker. Appearing in a Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet case, the highly complex watch is impressively ergonomic and highly contemporary. The history…
Over at Schaffhausen, one tends to focus on just one collection each year. Last year it was the Portugieser line, which underwent both a revision and extension. This year, however, another IWC favourite is in the limelight; pilot's watches. These models have always enjoyed a huge level of popularity at IWC – both with design-orientated…
The time we spend the rest of the year waiting for is nearly here – Watches and Wonders. Audemars Piguet, however, does things according to its own set of rules. On Thursday at the new AP House in Milan, CEO Ilaria Resta hosted the unveiling of over ten new models to the catalogue. The highlights…
Since its inception in 1995, Roger Dubuis has been a pioneer in the luxury watchmaking industry, continuously pushing boundaries and redefining standards. Through (almost) it all, the company has been home to Gregory Bruttin, who first came to Roger Dubuis in 2002. We caught up with Bruttin to discuss the significant changes in the company’s…
Looking back on the past is a habit that mankind has grown fond of. Because the future is always uncertain, because the experiences of the past have shaped us, and because once familiar times begin to fade from memory over the years. Moreover, we live in a time in which the designs of Gérald Genta…
If you are a go-getter type of person, someone that likes to get out of his comfort zone but always makes sure to only take reasonable risks, then this watch is for you. Not because you necessarily need to own a watch for being a go-getter type of guy, but because us men like to…
When it comes to the LVRR-01 Chronographe à Sonnerie, it’s a tale of opposites: an artisanal workshop tucked away in Geneva and the largest luxury lifestyle brand on the planet, coming together as one. When Louis Vuitton x Akrivia announced that they would be collaborating to create a new watch, we questioned how these vastly different brands could come together…
From a Rockstar point of view, IWC’s ‘Big Pilot’ watch has at least two advantages. First: being on tour, you can easily turn it into a bedside table clock due to its size and strong luminous power. Second: if you’re looking at pictures from past gigs one day, it just takes one glimpse onto the…
An Echo of the Past: With its [Re]master01 Selfwinding Chronograph, Audemars Piguet takes a look back into the past - and simultaneously allows for more freedom in the future. The Russian-French world chess champion Alexander Aljechin (1892-1946) is credited with having said: “With the help of chess, I shaped my character. The game of chess…
LOT 100 It was obvious that lot 100 would be the most expensive Rolex Yachtmaster sold so far. Going for €1.82 million, Patrick Heiniger's platinum watch remained within the auction house's estimate. For the successful bidder, however, the bill came to over €2.3 million (net), so the final price can certainly be considered a success.…
What is the point of a brand ambassador? To encapsulate the essence of a brand. Represent its values. Inspire others. These are all things that Panerai brand ambassador, Mike Horn, is certainly capable of – alongside much more. Over the years, the Switzerland-based South African has had his fair share of awe-inspiring adventures as well…
The history of the most expensive Omega watches ever offered at auction is simultaneously a narrative of the brand's greatest achievements, its illustrious heritage, and the most exquisite models it has produced throughout its long corporate history. The timepieces’ lofty prices are, in a sense, a reflection of the rich tradition they carry, and their…
