TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna 44 mm: TAG Heuer Honours Ayrton Senna With New Chronograph
TAG Heuer has dedicated a new automatic chronograph to its close relationship with Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna, who died in 1994: the Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna 44 mm.
More than three decades after his tragic fatal accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna’s driving skills are still honoured by TAG Heuer and motorsport enthusiasts. TAG Heuer looks back on a long history with Formula 1.
With three Drivers’ Championships, 41 Grand Prix victories and 65 pole positions, Senna’s record stands as testament to his extraordinary talent and unwavering determination. His legendary battles with Alain Prost and his supreme skill in wet conditions have ensured his name is etched in the annals of motorsport history.
Beyond his successes on the racetrack, Senna was beloved by fans around the world for his charisma, generosity and fighting spirit. His influence extended far beyond the boundaries of the racetrack. Just a few months after his death, his family founded the Instituto Ayrton Senna, which has already invested several hundred million US dollars in educational programmes for young people in his native Brazil. TAG Heuer supports this commitment with its special editions.
TAG Heuer x Ayrton Senna: A connection beyond death
Senna became Formula 1 world champion for the first time in 1988. In the same year, he began working closely with TAG Heuer, becoming an official brand ambassador in 1993. Shortly after his death on 1 May 1994, the 6000 Senna Limited Edition with a chequered flag dial was released, the first of many timepieces to follow, including quartz watches, mechanical models and the spectacular Carrera Tourbillon Extreme Sport x Senna. To this day, the brand remains committed to preserving Senna’s memory with limited editions. Each model features design elements inspired by his helmet and racing career. ‘Ayrton Senna was not only an exceptional racing driver, but also a symbol of precision, performance and passion,’ said Antoine Pin, CEO of TAG Heuer. ‘This new collection captures precisely these qualities in a bold design with masterful mechanics. Senna’s legacy continues to inspire us to this day.’
TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna
The Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna models presented at the São Paulo Grand Prix mark the next chapter in the brand’s collaboration with the legendary racing driver. In addition to the quartz model Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna 43 mm, limited to 3,000 pieces, mechanical watch enthusiasts will be particularly delighted by the Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna 44 mm with automatic movement.
Case: Titanium with black DLC coating
The titanium case of the mechanical version of the Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna 44 mm, which is water-resistant to 20 bar, has an impressive diameter of 44 millimetres. Its striking appearance is further emphasised by the black DLC coating. The forged carbon bezel with tachymeter scale and the distinctive S logo at 12 o’clock also demonstrate the lightness of the material.
The yellow-painted crown, the yellow ring between the bezel and case, and the newly designed pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock demonstrate TAG Heuer’s ongoing attention to detail in the design of the Senna timepieces. This is also evident in the screw-down case back, which is engraved with Ayrton Senna’s piercing gaze through the visor of his helmet and, of course, the S logo.
Dial: strong contrasts for easy readability
The black case surrounds a black dial with a sunburst finish and colourful accents. At 6 o’clock, the 12-hour chronograph counter is emblazoned with the colours of the Brazilian national flag. Opposite it is the 30-minute chronograph counter with a bright yellow lacquered hand.
And at the 9 o’clock position, the sweeping yellow Senna S adorns the small seconds display. The central chronograph seconds hand picks up on the signal colour, ensuring that the elapsed time can be easily read on the seconds scale surrounding the dial. In addition, there are new Super-LumiNova-coated indices inspired by Formula 1 livery and skeletonised, black-coated hour and minute hands. The date can be read at 3 o’clock.
Movement: Proven reliability
The proven TAG Heuer Calibre 16 ensures reliable precision for the hour, minute, second, chronograph and date functions. The automatic chronograph movement is based on a Sellita SW500 and offers a 42-hour power reserve.
Wristband, packaging, and price
The Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna 44 mm is worn on a striking yellow rubber strap. The specially designed dark blue packaging is decorated with three stripes that echo the colours of Ayrton Senna’s helmet and includes a travel case.
