Vacheron Constantin Historiques Triple Calendrier 1942
For over 20 years, the collection ‘Historique’ by Vacheron Constantin is regularly extended by historically relevant watches of the Maison, models like the Cornes de Vache from 1955, the American from 1921 or the Fine from 1955. Since a crucial horological passion of founder Jean-Marc Vacheron has been in the technical making of calendar watches, it was about time in 2017 to finally dedicate these references a place in this prestige collection. The brand decided to pick the first wristwatch of Vacheron Constantin with a triple calendar, the Triple Calendar reference 4240 from 1942.
In 2017, finally a calendar watch has found its place in the collection Historiques
In the 1940s, this complication was en vogue – however it was a difficult period for Swiss brands due to the Great Depression and political tensions. So, it was not the time for elegant dress-watches but instead, military watches with more functional features took over. But it was just these calendar-models of this era that got around and contributed significantly to the success of Vacheron Constantin in the 20th century. They are highly coveted by collectors and hardly seen at auctions.
Very comfortable to wear with a 40mm case diameter
If you do get your hands on one you will spot how detailed they have worked on the Vacheron Constantin Historiques Triple Calendrier 1942. The case has now like then a triple gadroon, meaning a border of the caseband. The ‘claw’ style lugs have been applied onto the case so perfectly smooth, as if case and lugs would have been made from one piece. The vintage watches in comparison however show a little less smooth transition from case to lug.

The Triple Calendar from 1942 came with a yellow gold, rose gold and steel version. Surprisingly they decided for a steel version only in terms of the 1942 re-edition. At the same time in 2017, Vacheron Constantin also presented two re-editions of the Triple Calendrier 1948, limited and in rose gold. So possibly they deliberately wanted to yield precedence to the special editions in terms of a gold upgrade. Ironically, 1942 has been the more crisis suffering year, so steel a synonym for a more unstable economically period.

The hand-wound calibre 4400 QC (quantième complet) runs the hours, minutes and small second at 6 o’clock. The day- and month indications in the aperture below 12 o’clock are hand-typed in a succulent burgundy colour. There is a second version in dark blue with a matching blue leather strap. We have a two-tone silvered dial which is typical of the 1940s. The center has been sunburst satin-finished.

The Arabic numerals ‚5‘ and ‚7‘ had to give way to the small seconds and appear little left out. Maybe here, they should have not copied from the original and find an elegant, modern solution. It would have been more aesthetic and also interesting to see the reactions of connoisseurs of vintage references. The crown however has not survived the ravages of time and luckily received some more volume.

Perpetual Calendar watches have a special status at Patek Philippe. The major reason for this might be, that in 1925 they equipped the first wristwatch ever with this mechanism, the reference 97 975. The function however reaches back to watchmaker Thomas Mudge, who produced the first pocket watch with Perpetual Calendar in 1864. Also watch…
Louis Vuitton and Geneva-based watchmaker Akrivia surprised the watch world with their recently announced collaboration that resulted in the majestic LVRR-01 Chronographe à Sonnerie. You can find a detailed report on the timepiece and the collaboration between the two brands here. In the run-up to the event, we had the opportunity to speak personally with…
Did you know that in regards to the world time-zones, the Russian capital Moscow recently has shifted one hour closer to Western Europe, being relocated to UTC+3 instead of UTC+4 as it has been for decades? And did you hear that Dubai now represents the time-zone instead of Riyadh, or Brisbane instead of Noumea? Some…
‘Born to dare’, ‘Don’t crack under pressure’, ‘Live for greatness’ – every brand has a mantra by which it defines itself. Swiss watch manufacture Rado, aka the self-proclaimed ‘Master of Materials’, stands by the words: ‘If we can imagine it, we can make it. And if we can make it, we will.’ But, in a world in which watch brands grapple with mineral composite fibres and dabble with concrete cases, where exactly…
During our last conversation about six months ago, Panerai CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué surprised us with his ambitious intention to launch a 100 percent recycled mechanical watch. Now, shortly prior to the unveiling of the brand's latest pieces at Watches & Wonders 2021, we caught up with him once again. There was one key question to…
Jean-Claude Biver is a figurehead which many know and associate with watchmaking in this day and age. A huge collector in his own right, he was integral in the turnaround of the Blancpain brand, as well has having held positions of power at the likes of Omega and Hublot. Eventually he went on to create…
GMT-Master II Ref. 126710BLNR Last year, Rolex caused a small sensation with the return of the GMT-Master II ‘Pepsi’ (Ref. 126710 BLRO) and its long-awaited steel version. If there were a superhero in the watch industry, it would probably be François-Henry Bennahmias, the head of the Swiss watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet. The success he has helped the brand achieve over the past 11 years as CEO is actually impossible to accomplish with normal human strength. Since taking over as CEO of AP…
One midsummer's day in early July, we have an appointment with Sylvain Berneron, founder of the eponymous watch brand. The address we have been given is just outside Neuchâtel, where he and his small team recently moved into a new office. When we arrive at the premises, we have to ask where exactly the company…
Before considering the best green dial watches of 2024 thus far, let's start with some context. Historians have long defined different eras through time frames containing common characteristics. In the watch world, to give an obvious example, you could say that the pocket watch era spanned from the 16th to 20th century. Meanwhile, the birth…
A childhood dream has come true. Thanks to Mercedes-AMG and IWC Schaffhausen who teamed up at the Nürburgring 24-hours race to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the performance sports car brand of Mercedes-Benz, which took it’s name from the initials of the founders Hans Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melcher and the town where it all began,…
Jaeger-LeCoultre is much more then just ‘Reverso’, an icon that most watch enthusiasts might instantly have in mind thinking about the brand. Jaeger-LeCoultre also characterizes a deeply rooted passion for extreme sports watches. After all, the Reverso was originally made for sports too – for Polo players, but it can more likely be regarded as…
When luxury steel sports watches with integrated bracelets suddenly appeared in the 1970s, it was not only Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe that caused a stir with their Royal Oak and Nautilus creations. Vacheron Constantin was also quick to recognize the trend – despite it not even being perceived as such at the time, but rather dismissed as outrageous…
