The Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Sylt Edition is a diver’s watch limited to just 50 pieces. The 42 mm stainless steel model features a navy blue dial, a unidirectional rotating ceramic bezel and an engraved caseback.
With the Superocean Automatic 42 Sylt Edition, Breitling presents a diver’s watch limited to 50 pieces, capturing the distinctive spirit of the North Sea island of Sylt in a functional timekeeping instrument. This special edition draws on the design codes of the Slow Motion from the 1960s, combining clean lines with excellent legibility – defining features that have characterised Breitling’s Superocean family since its introduction.
Case
The stainless steel case of the Superocean Automatic 42 Sylt Edition has a diameter of 42 millimetres and a height of 12.56 millimetres. Polished and satin-finished surfaces create a balanced interplay of light and shadow. A domed sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating enhances scratch and shatter resistance while minimising disruptive reflections. The unidirectional rotating bezel with ceramic inlay and ratchet mechanism allows for precise underwater time measurements and retains its colour intensity over time. The screw-down crown, fitted with two gaskets, contributes to the 300-metre water resistance, as does the screw-down steel caseback. The latter is adorned with an engraving of a pair of seals, while the outer ring features the inscriptions ‘Sylt Edition’ and ‘One of 50’ – a nod to its limited production. The combination of robust materials, thoughtful sealing, and classic design makes the case a central element of this maritime special edition.
Dial of the Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Sylt Edition
The striking marine blue of the dial is inspired by the changing shades of blue seen in the North Sea between Kampen and List at different times of the day. Combined with the clean typography, it conveys a sporty yet elegant impression. Bright accents in North Sea azure on the rehaut with minute markings and the seconds hand provide contrast and evoke the crashing waves along the coastline. Broad, angular hour and minute indices and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova, ensuring excellent legibility even in dark depths or at night. The absence of redundant displays keeps the dial uncluttered, with just two hands for hours and minutes prioritising clarity. Aesthetically, the design pays homage to Breitling’s historical Slow Motion models, focusing on streamlined shapes, minimalistic elements, and maximum functionality. At the same time, the dial exudes a modern, urban vibe, making it equally suitable for pairing with a suit in the city or a wetsuit on the beach.
Movement
Inside the Superocean Automatic 42 Sylt Edition beats the Breitling Calibre 17, an automatic in-house movement with a bidirectional ball-bearing rotor. Operating at a balance frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), it ensures precise timekeeping and holds COSC certification, guaranteeing deviations of only a few seconds per day. The power reserve is approximately 38 hours – sufficient for daily use, though modest compared to modern calibres offering over 70 hours. The movement has a diameter of 25.6 millimetres and a height of 4.6 millimetres.
Strap
The Sylt Edition is worn on a marine blue rubber strap, renowned for its water resistance, flexibility, and durability, making it ideal for use in wet environments or during athletic activities. The adjustable clasp offers up to 15 millimetres of extension, allowing the watch to be worn over a wetsuit or thick outdoor clothing and enhancing comfort during dives or watersports.
