There is little doubt that Glashütte Original operates firmly in the here and now. Equally indisputable, however, is its bond with the past. Now part of the Swatch Group, the brand traces its roots back to 1845 and the former Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb. As a modern traditionalist, Glashütte Original has mastered the delicate art of uniting both eras in its creations.
Yet the company’s gaze is set not only on past and present, but also on the future. This forward-looking spirit is evidenced by the opening of a new dial manufactory in June this year – a facility that combines high-tech production with traditional craftsmanship. It is a farsighted and meaningful step, recognising that for collectors today, the design of the dial stands alongside, and often after, the excellence of the movement as a decisive factor in a watch’s appeal.
And this brings us directly to the new Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date models, which combine the characteristic Seventies case design with state-of-the-art movement technology and two striking colourways. The latter draw inspiration from futuristic scenarios depicted in virtual illustrations. Naturally, the vividly coloured dials are crafted in the brand’s very own dial manufactory.
Lacquered dial
Glashütte Original has named the bold shades Plasma and Fusion – violet and lime green – chosen for the matt-lacquered dials. At three and nine o’clock, the two black galvanised sub-dials with their fine grooves evoke the charm of a classic vinyl record. The digital 12-hour counter beneath the logo and the Panorama Date at six o’clock also serve as eye-catching features, while the black-coated baton markers and hands, filled with Super-LumiNova, together with the white minute track, take a more understated role. Subtle, too, is the power reserve display discreetly integrated into the sub-dial at nine o’clock.
Square case
Since its debut in 2014, the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date has appeared with a wide array of dials in varying hues. Whether bold or restrained, however, the eye is always first drawn to the case: a square with rounded edges – a hallmark of futuristic design in the 1960s and 1970s. In the two latest editions, the case once again measures 40 by 40 millimetres. It is crafted from polished and satin-brushed stainless steel and is water-resistant to ten bar. Sapphire crystal on both the front and the back reveals two very different, yet inseparably linked, perspectives: one technical, the other aesthetic.
Refined manufacture chronograph calibre
As with its predecessors, the new Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date duo is powered by the in-house Calibre 37-02. This chronograph movement features a flyback function, column-wheel control, stop-seconds, Panorama Date, power reserve display, and both 12-hour and 30-minute counters. Beating at a frequency of 4 hertz, it delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. The decorations are equally generous: the signature Glashütte three-quarter plate with stripe finish, a skeletonised rotor bearing the Glashütte Original double-G logo, bevelled and polished edges, as well as blued screws.
Two bracelet options
Securing the watch to the wrist is either a matte black rubber strap with folding clasp or a stainless-steel bracelet with fine adjustment. Both versions feature a lug width of 26 millimetres.
The Vintage collection
The fashions of the Seventies – wide trousers, long hair, and bold colours – remain among the most frequently cited and reinterpreted. Glashütte Original, too, has embraced the spirit of this era, dedicating an entire collection to the Sixties and Seventies under the fitting name Vintage. Since 2014, this line has been enriched by the striking Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date.
