Guitarist John McLaughlin and his ravishingly attractive LeCoultre
Upon attending the Only Watch Preview in Monaco, guitarist legend John McLaughlin suddenly crosses our path. What on earth is one of the best guitarists in the world doing at such a specific, specialised event? We discover that not only is he a huge watch enthusiast, but also, together with independent Swiss watch brand Artya, he is designing a truly exceptional watch, which was to be sold off at November’s Only Watch charity auction barely two months later.
On November 6, the one-off Artya x John McLaughlin watch was auctioned off for 55,000 Swiss francs in aid of the Monegasque Association Against Muscular Dystrophy – its estimated selling price had been between 35,000 to 50,000 Swiss francs.
The watch upon his wrist so striking us is a pretty rare 1950s LeCoultre, a gift from his wife from Boston sometime in the 1990s. The lugs of the watch are particularly noticeable, and are not something we have ever seen the likes of before. Golden loops are welded onto the yellow-gold case, fastening the lugs to which they are attached. The ivory-coloured dial has tapered hour markers and a minute track, which does not lie around the very periphery of the dial, but rather further within. Meanwhile, the small seconds lie at 6 o’clock.
Another notable feature of this model is that the dial is signed solely LeCoultre. Could this be a model, then from before the coming together of the movement manufacture LeCoultre and watchmaker Jaeger? No – it has nothing to do with the time of production, but rather with the place. Because of limiting toll restrictions at the time, the case, dial, and hands were made in the USA between the 1930s and 1970s. On the US market, the models were therefore signed with LeCoultre, while the European models read Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The watch has neither a model name nor a reference – there were actually models at JLC at that time which were not assigned to any particular collection or line. The diameter of the timepiece is 29.5 mm, the case is finished with 14-carat yellow-gold, and inside the beautiful stranger ticks the calibre 480.
During his lifetime, John McLaughlin owned a diverse range of Swiss watches, including an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, a golden Rolex GMT, a Rolex Submariner, a Cartier Tank Reverso (yes it really existed), an Oris Pilot’s watch, and a Parmigiani. He may no longer have all of these watches, but, says the musician, he still wears his LeCoultre regularly.
Geneva-based manufacturer Czapek & Cie. is expanding its Antarctique Passage de Drake sports watch collection with two new variants. The model now appears with a dial in the ice blue "Glacier Blue" or in Salmon. According to Czapek, these colors were frequently requested by collectors, which is why the manufacture finally decided to include them…
The French language sounds just as pretty like a chanson from Edith Piaf. A rather uncharming word like ‘cow horns’ turns in French into an elegant ‘Cornes de Vache’. This example is not chosen by accident: it is the nickname of a very special watch from Vacheron Constantin, that in 1955 appeared by the simple…
When it comes to the LVRR-01 Chronographe à Sonnerie, it’s a tale of opposites: an artisanal workshop tucked away in Geneva and the largest luxury lifestyle brand on the planet, coming together as one. When Louis Vuitton x Akrivia announced that they would be collaborating to create a new watch, we questioned how these vastly different brands could come together…
What establishes a bicompax chronograph from a "normal" one? Principally, a bicompax chronograph (as the name suggests) has not three, but rather only two subdial counters. Along with this year's trend for green dial watches, the horology world is also seeing a resurgence of bicompax chronographs, which have been on the scene since the 20th…
For some people travelling is the epitome of freedom – for others it is just normal daily business. “Once a year you should visit a place you have never been before” Dalai Lama said and points out a desire that is deeply rooted in many people. In this growing connected world people don’t only travel…
If A. Lange & Söhne is revered as Germany’s most formidable watch manufacture, the Lange 1 is, undoubtedly, its pièce de résistance. With A. Lange & Söhne having been founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, a small town in Germany that would become known as a centre for watchmaking, East Germany nationalised…

As a somewhat seasoned purveyor of the watch industry by now, I would personally assert that Vacheron Constantin’s Les Cabinotiers is one of the absolute highest watchmaking departments on the planet. Over the years, the Swiss horology house’s unique creations division has produced some of the most complex watches of all time, blending groundbreaking horological…
Ever since the Wright brothers revolutionised aviation in 1903, watch manufactures have competed to produce the best, most precise, and most functional tool watches for the skies. Given the superlatives with which some manufactures gild themselves today, it is easy to lose track of who actually played what role and when. After all, there are…
As you might have heard, Patek Philippe invested 600 million Swiss francs into its new factory building in Plan-les-Ouates, which was completed earlier this year. If you are wondering what such a large sum was spent on, and how the Stern family is envisaging the balancing act between preserving tradition and looking to the future,…
Looking back at the past with a sense of longing, yet always pushing forwards – that seems to be a part of human nature. Whether in fashion or art, architecture or engineering, both factors drive us in life. But when it comes to both the automotive and watch industries, this balancing act between the cultivation…
In light of the release of the OMEGA Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary, it is well worth reliving the story of the tensest space missions in history, in which OMEGA's Speedmaster proved instrumental in providing safety for NASA's Apollo 13 crew. Destined for the moon It was April 11, 1970, when an unprecendented catastrophe…
The beauty of traditional watch manufactures is, that on the one hand production methods that once made them strong are still being emphasized today, and on the other hand this unbroken innovation spirit from past times still generates modern and exciting new techniques. The Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 that has been introduced at the beginning…
