Mido Ocean Star 600 Chronometer Black DLC And GMT Special Edition
At this year’s Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Paris, Mido took the opportunity to introduce two new models in its Ocean Star collection: the COSC-certified Ocean Star 600 Chronometer Black DLC as well as the GMT Special Edition.
Mido is the Official Performance Partner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Taking place at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the 24 competitors at the event perform ‘free diving’, in which they brave heights of up to 27 metres. Mido has acted as the sponsor of the event since 2019.
The Ocean Star 600 Chronometer Black DLC’s case consists of stainless-steel with black DLC treatment. In addition, the watch has a unidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic ring. The case – which is water-resistant to 600 m – and its matching bracelet alternate between shiny and satin finishes. In a special nod to Mido’s work in the historic field of water-resistance, the screw-down caseback features a polished starfish.
The Dial
Mido opts for a black lacquer dial and polished indices that use green Super-LumiNova. This material provides legibility around the clock and in the ocean depths. As well as offering hours and minutes, Mido integrates an orange-tipped seconds hand.
Furthermore, a large triangle lies at 12 o’clock, providing orientation for the wearer under any sporting condition. In addition, Super-LumiNova is also present on the bezel – another essential feature for divers. For those using the Ocean Star 600 Chronometer Black DLC as a daily watch, a handy date aperture sits at 3 o’clock. The sapphire crystal protecting the dial has anti-reflective treatment on both sides for the sake of easy readability in the water.
The Movement
Alongside its 80 hour power reserve, the Mido Calibre 80 Si is particularly accurate and shock-resistant thanks to the inclusion of a silicon balance spring. The COSC-certified movement beats at a frequency of 3 Hz. Furthermore, while not visible due to the solid caseback, the calibre features a decorative disc with a transferred ‘Si’ (for silicon) logo on the balance bridge, as well as blued screws and an oscillating weight decorated with both Geneva stripes and the Mido logo.
Strap and Price
Last but not least, the watch comes with a matching bracelet with a diving extension. Mido also offers an alternative black rubber strap. The price of the Ocean Star 600 Chronometer Black DLC is 1,650 euros with a bracelet or 1,490 euros with a strap.
Ocean Star GMT Special Edition
In addition to the Ocean Star 600 Chronometer Black DLC, Mido is also introducing the Ocean Star GMT Special Edition. Featuring a maritime blue dial and a matching ceramic bezel, it is available with either an interchangeable steel bracelet or NATO strap mirroring the colours of the watch.
The special edition is housed in a stainless-steel case with a 44 mm diameter and height of 13.5 mm. The red accents on this piece help to define the day/night function, as well as making the GMT function legible. Powering the special edition is the Calibre 80. The Ocean Star GMT Special Edition is resistant up to 20 bar (200 m) and its price is 1,320 euros.
