Omega offers a new take on the Speedmaster Moonphase. Now equipped with meteorite dials and a revised chronograph inside, the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite offer much appreciated updates to the enticing albeit until now somewhat forlorn collection. The two variants feature a substantially slim downed case profile (from 16,9 down to 13,6 mm) by ditching the automatic wind in favour of a manual one – a decision that is causing controversy. The meteorite dials are PVD-coated in either black or grey. The dual moonphase display now integrates both hemispheres. Also the bracelet is updated to match the current theme of the Speedmaster Moonwatch series. Here are the details of the new Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite.
The case of the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite is made of stainless steel and has a diameter of 43 mm. The thickness is 13.6 mm, which is substantially thinner compared to the 16,9 mm of the previous version. The water resistance is only 50 m, making the watch unsuitable for swimming. The front is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, while the case back also features a sapphire crystal, allowing a view of the movement. The pushers and crown are also made of stainless steel and offer good grip and ease of use.
The dial of the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite is made of iron meteorite and is available in two versions: one with a black PVD coating and one with a galvanic grey coating. The unique pattern of the meteorite is different for each watch and adds a special touch. The hour markers and hands are made of 18K white gold or 18K gold and are coated with luminescent material, ensuring good readability in the dark. The subdials for the small seconds and the chronograph are also made of meteorite and provide a nice contrast to the rest of the dial. The highlight of the dial is the moon phase display at 6 o’clock, which features two cabochon moons made from genuine moon meteorite and shows the starry sky as it was on the night of the Apollo 11 landing.
The Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite is powered by the brand new manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9914. The movement has a power reserve of 60 hours and is equipped with the Co-Axial escapement, which reduces friction and increases the longevity of the movement. The frequency is a higher 28.800 vph (4 Hz). The special finish of the movement is visible through the sapphire crystal case back and includes Geneva stripes and blued screws. The movement is also anti-magnetic up to 15,000 gauss and has passed the tests of the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), ensuring high precision and reliability.
The Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite comes with a stainless steel bracelet that is both polished and brushed. The bracelet features Omega’s patented comfort release adjustment system, allowing for easy adjustment of the length. The clasp is a folding clasp and provides a secure hold.
The Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite is now available at authorised dealers. The price for the watch is 18.700 euros.
