Oris is introducing a new limited edition – the Carysfort Reef Limited Edition in stainless-steel. The GMT diver’s watch, which provides three time zones, supports the Florida-based, non-profit Coral Restoration Foundation. It is the second Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition we have seen this year – the first was an 18-carat gold version of the Aquis GMT, limited to 50 pieces. Meanwhile, 2,000 pieces of this new stainless-steel version will be available. It is presented on either a matching steel bracelet or a bright orange rubber strap.
Currently, corals are fast declining. According to scientists, the Earth has lost 50 percent of its coral reefs in the last 30 years. This is largely due to man-made causes. The Coral Restoration Foundation works to restore these damaged reefs. Since 2014, the organisation has been working on the Carysfort Reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. In this area, the foundation has returned nearly 25,000 corals thanks to its outplanting programmes. It’s a long process – restoring coral takes between six and nine months, and requires constant monitoring and cleaning.
The Coral Restoration Foundation’s partnership with Oris began back in 2014, as part of the horology house’s Change for the Better campaign. In 2017, the organisation and manufacture released the product of their first collaboration, with the OrisDiving Aquis DateStaghorn Restoration Limited Edition. Taking into account the gold limited edition produced earlier this year, the new stainless-steel Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition marks the third watch to result from the partnership.
The Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition is housed in a 43.5 mm, multi-piece stainless steel case with a screwed caseback and screw-in crown. Meanwhile, the bidirectional rotating ceramic bezel features a GMT scale, and is tinted in both blue and black (indicating day/night). As to be expected in a diver’s watch, the hands and indices are legible 24/7 thanks to the use of Super-LumiNova. Also typical is the domed sapphire crystal protection the blue gradient dial, which benefits from an inner anti-reflective coating.
Meanwhile, the dial itself displays a number of essential diver functions, including centre hands for hours and minutes, plus a lollipop seconds hand. Meanwhile, the GMT function allows for a second time zone to be read. This is indicated by a central hand, which makes a full revolution once every 24 hours. This time can be read thanks to the dial’s 24-hour chapter ring. Finally, a laser-engraved 24-hour scale on the bi-directional rotating bezel provides the wearer with a third time zone.
Powering the model is the automatic Oris 798 calibre, which has 42-hour power reserve and a frequency of 4 Hz. Based on Sellita’s SW330-1, the movement is the same as the limited edition’s 18-carat gold Aquis GMT sibling. As mentioned, the movement provides the watch with an instantaneous date.
The Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition in stainless-steel is presented in a special box, which is made from algae – making it a sustainable storage option. The timepiece is available with either the stainless-steel bracelet or orange rubber strap. Both options are operated via a stainless–steel security folding clasp with an extension.
Finally, the timepiece is water-resistant to 300 m. It is priced at 2,700 euros with a stainless-steel bracelet, or 2,500 euros with the alternative orange rubber strap.
