Roger Dubuis Introduces The Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph Revuelto – The Watch For The New Lamborghini
On the occasion of the presentation of the Lamborghini Revuelto, the first electrified super sports car with V12 hybrid drive, Roger Dubuis is introducing the fifth generation of its famed chronograph. Inspired by the colours and aerodynamic curves of its motorised role model, the new Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph once again demonstrates the strong synergy between the two partners.
The Lamborghini Revuelto – the first electrified super sports car
As it reaches its 60th anniversary, Lamborghini is introducing the successor to the legendary Aventador: the completely newly developed Revuelto. The new Revuelto is a milestone in Lamborghini’s history and – to the chagrin of some car enthusiasts – the first step in the company’s electrification strategy called ‘Direzione Cor Tauri’. Cor Tauri is the auspicious name of the brightest star in the constellation of the bull, which should show Lamborghini the way to an electrified future, all the while remaining true to the heart and soul of the brand.
This approach is followed by the Revuelto, which, with a combination of a naturally aspirated V-12 engine with a transverse eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and three electric motors, represents a balanced equilibrium in terms of emitted emissions. This special composition puts the Revuelto at the top of its segment in terms of performance. In fact, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, and its top speed is beyond 350 km/h. The 6.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with transverse eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and three electric motors provide the power. All in all, the 6.5-litre V-12 engine with 825 hp (607 kW) and the three electric motors, each with 110 kW (150 hp), ensure that a Lamborghini has a four-digit hp value for the first time ever.
The automotive industry is facing a changing landscape, to which Lamborghini must also bow. After the first step of launching the first series model with hybrid drive, which has now been completed with the Revuelto, the second step is to electrify the entire product range by 2024. A record investment of more than 1.5 billion euros is planned for this conversion – the largest investment in the company’s history. This strategy seems to be working, as it has been announced that the Revuelto is already completely sold out for 2024 and 2025.
Der Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph
For anyone who has followed Roger Dubuis’ launches closely this year, it is clear that the Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph is succeeding two other chronographs launched earlier this year. Firstly, we have the Monovortex Split Seconds Chronograph, which made its debut at Watches and Wonders in Geneva, and secondly, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph, which was presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. With the introduction of a total of three chronographs, it isclear that Roger Dubuis is putting the chronograph function in the spotlight and building its product portfolio around it.
The case
The strongest reference to the automotive role model is the 45 mm case, which is equipped with a ceramic bezel – an homage to the construction of sports cars that use the same material for the brakes. The pushers are skeletonised in typical Roger Dubuis fashion and evoke the lightweight construction of the Lamborghini. Turning the watch over reveals the winding rotor, which imitates a rim with its five stems.
The dial
The dial of the Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph offers a wealth of small details. One element is located at 6 o’clock and is the column wheel. At 9 o’clock, the eye-catching inclined balance has an increased inertia with an inclination of 12°, thus offering special shock resistance. The most important feature of the dial, however, is the patented Roger Dubuis minute counter. This is an innovative display that is easy to read despite its novelty: the tens 1, 2 and 3 move along ten indexes to indicate the individual minutes.
The movement
The RD780 calibre consists of a total of 333 handmade components and differs in its production from a modular approach, as the watchmakers have the freedom to design the movement from scratch. A special feature of this calibre is the flyback function, which allows the wearer to instantly restart the timer function while a chronograph is running. In addition, the calibre has an impressive power reserve of 72 hours.
Price and availability
The Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph comes on a green rubber strap with orange stitching. The quick release system ensures that the wearer can change the strap with ease.
The Excalibur Spider Revuelto Flyback Chronograph is taking place at Watches and Wonders in Shanghai, which takes place from the 13th to the 17th of this month. It should be said, however, that the watch, with a purchase price of 114,500 euros, is as hard to come by as the Revuelto itself: only 88 pieces will be available, as the discreet tachymeter scale on the edge of the dial reveals.
