Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01565 e-Commerce Edition
Ahead of this year’s America’s Cup, Panerai is introducing the Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01565 in satin-finished stainless steel. The timepiece pays tribute to the manufacture’s role as sponsor of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team, which has been in action since 2019. Prada and Panerai already competed in their first America’s Cup in 2021. Now, a new round of partnership lies ahead as the sailing regatta takes place for the 37th time. Accordingly, this limited edition model, available exclusively online, draws inspiration from the competition at sea through its aesthetics and functionality. The watch is visible for all to admire on site from the second day of Watches and Wonders 2024 onwards.
The case
The satin-finished 42 mm case of the Submersible Luna Rossa in AISI 316L stainless steel provides a bright contrast to the otherwise matt-black and blue tones of the timepiece. A steel bezel with a matt-black, extremely scratch-resistant ceramic disc is attached to the case and turns anti-clockwise. Sapphire crystal and a screw-down caseback protect the watch. The Luna Rossa is water-resistant to a depth of 300 metres, and has been exposed to pressures of up to 25% above the guaranteed water resistance. In addition, an engraving of a slow-moving torpedo on the back of the case offers a small yet appealing detail. This detail refers to the fact that the commandos of the Italian Navy would travel underwater on this so-called ‘pig’ on their missions in the 1940s, while using the Florentine brand’s instruments to do so.
The dial
When looking at the sea from above, we encounter an interplay of light and dark colours down below. The blue dial of the Submersible Luna Rossa pays homage to this sight, modelling the black colour gradient and sunburst pattern on the reflections of water. Meanwhile, the ‘Luna Rossa’ lettering is a reminder of Panerai’s commitment to sailing. The small red seconds hand at 9 o’clock also refers to this, adding a colourful accent to the dark dial. At 3 o’clock, on the other hand, the dial provides the date via a small window. To ensure that the time can be read on and in the water even in poor conditions, Panerai treat the hands, the dot, and baton hour markers to a coating of Super-LumiNova.
The movement
With a diameter of 28 mm and a height of just 4.2 mm, the P.900 automatic calibre is one of the thinnest automatic calibres in Panerai’s repertoire. It powers the Submersible Luna Rossa at a frequency of 4 Hz and has a power reserve of 72 hours. The calibre also integrates an Incabloc shock protection system and a stop-second function that enables precise time setting.
Strap, price and availability
Those who wear the PAM01565 need not settle for just one strap, but rather can choose between two options. A grey material strap with red Luna Rossa accents gives the timepiece a strikingly sporty look. Alternatively, a dark blue rubber strap can create a simpler aesthetic. A trapezoidal pin buckle made from AISI 316L stainless steel ensures a secure fit on the wrist. The wearer can easily switch out their choice of strap with the aid of an interchangeable system and a special tool that comes with the watch.
This special edition of the Submersible Luna Rossa is available exclusively online for 11,500 euros and is a limited edition of 300 pieces.
