It has recently become quite obvious throughout the watch industry that many brands dig deep in their archives and recall on their heritage. But why does everyone seem to wallow in memory of the old times? It is probably just an instinctively reaction in times of change, and without doubt the watch industry – just like pretty much most of the world – is in transition. We all need to accept that it is a fast moving period – possibly too fast. But it is not always necessary to move in a forward direction. You can take one step back, as long as you do two steps forward.
Like from a past time – the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback Retro-Style
Lucerne based watchmarker Carl F. Bucherer does not only have a long tradition with a deep heritage, but also an incredible strong knowledge in watch manufacturing. And possibly with their new Manero Flyback Retro-Style they just have caught the spirit of the time, taking a step back in history, but at the same time use modern technology and pick up a current trend.
The perforated leather wristband reminds us of the straps from car racing watches from the 60th and 70th
The general Manero collection stands for elegant, complex and timeless watches. From the outside you will always find the cleaned-up case and dial, smooth rounding, but from inside the watches are usually equipped with either a Tourbillon or Moonphase and Perpetual Calendar complications. And in 2016 they added a Flyback to the Manero collection, which is now being re-launched as a Retro-style edition.
The color combination on the dial enhances the Retro look
What has changed is not so much the inside, but the outside appearance. It still houses the CFB 1970 chronograph calibre with flyback function. A flyback is that useful and clever function allowing to stop, reset and start the chronograph all at once by only pressing the pusher (usually at 4 o’clock) instead of stopping, resetting and restarting with one push each.

The case style of the Manero collection is already kind of retro itself. Now this look is enhanced by the contrasting colours of the new Manero Flyback Retro-Style. The black dial matches very well with the silver totalizators and the red touches that are subtle worked into the dial. Whereas most Manero watches come with a black or brown leather strap, Carl F. Bucherer this time has used a golden brown ‘kudu’-leather strap with suede finish which takes you – at least now – back in time, to the Chronographs used for car racings with their distinctive perforation. No surprise that the Manero Flyback Retro-Style is inspired by the CFB models from the 1960s and 1970s.

The automatic movement offers a power reserve of 42 hours and the recording of short times operates via a thermally blued gear wheel. It is not an in-house movement however a very reliable ETA7750 modified by La Joux-Perret, a Swiss specialist in movement manufacturing.
The American Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the brand IWC in 1868 and he wanted to pair Swiss craftsmanship in watchmaking with American manufacturing technologies. IWC became a specialist in creating excellent pocket watches. Even though the brand’s initials stand for ‘International’ Watch Company and was founded by an American citizen, it always was – and…
Whenever Raphael Nadal sweeps across the court for hours again while wearing his Richard Mille watch, the sportsman doesn’t have to care any longer about damage that might be caused by overwinding. Thanks to Richard Milles newest invention: a declutching rotor system. Given that the Richard Mille testimonial already owns one of the only 100…
While many Swiss brands have been around for over a century, Roger Dubuis is not amongst them. In fact, the highly exclusive brand was founded less than three decades ago, back in 1995. Perhaps this is one reason for the brand producing some of the most striking, even outrageous horological creations out there. In its…
Salmon are impressive fish, facing a substantial amount of danger throughout their lives. This "danger" applies primarily to the fact that they are on the menu for a broad variety of animals along the food chain. After all, salmon aren't just nutritional (not to mention delicious) for humans alone. Whether salmon qualifies as a delicacy…
At first glance, one could almost forget that this new Breguet model—limited to just 250 pieces—is a precision timekeeping instrument, despite the fact that much of its intricate mechanism remains visible even while worn on the wrist. The Breguet Tradition 7035 stands as a symbol of 250 years of aesthetic refinement and innovation. Today, Abraham-Louis…
In a feat almost as impressive as Apollo 13, we were able to gather all three legendary OMEGA Snoopy watches together in the same room. We decided to size them up in the metal, from aesthetics and functionality, to the story behind each watch. It's time to focus on three extraordinary things: Space, Snoopy, and…
Can a watch manufacture become any more sovereign than this? The soon-to-be-instated King Charles III of England is the owner of a Parmigiani Fleurier. King Charles has long worn the watch, but now, as a prince becomes a king, his choice carries even more weight: the British crown puts his trust in Parmigiani Fleurier. Meanwhile,…
As every good collector knows, the smallest of changes can make a huge difference to watches. Panerai is revising its most important model, the Luminor Marina. The PAM01312 becomes the PAM03312. Same, same, but (totally) different? It's a game-changer, says Swisswatches expert Joern Kengelbach. First impressions: Does the new Panerai suit my wrist? I travelled…
At Watches & Wonders 2022, Swisswatches caught up with Piaget CEO Benjamin Comar to discuss all things Piaget – from ultra-thin watches to the gender-specific watch debate, to what he describes as his ‘COVID-19 babies’. GMT watches are ideal for people who regularly work with different time zones or travel frequently. They allow you to keep track of up to two additional time zones alongside the local time – a practical companion for businesspeople, frequent flyers, and globe-trotters. But how did GMT watches come by their world-famous name, how do…
The last couple of years have been quiet for Carl F. Bucherer’s Manero Flyback. Now, the chronograph is back, and, it seems, better than ever. It was in 2016 that the Manero collection first introduced a new series of watches featuring a chronograph movement with a flyback function. Then, at Baselworld 2017, three models equipped…
Vacheron Constantin Vacheron Constantin's watchmaking expertise is undisputed. The manufacture has been demonstrating this expertise since 1755 – that's right: for 270 years, without interruption. Since its reestablishment in 1994, A. Lange & Söhne has already developed and produced more than 70 different calibres in-house – but what has been missing so far is a movement exclusively with a perpetual calendar and a minute repeater. At Watches & Wonders 2025, the Glashütte watchmaker is now presenting the Minute Repeater Perpetual…
