Gübelin Presents The Ipsomatic, a Limited Edition Watch Made of Platinum For Its 170th Anniversary
The renowned Swiss Luxury Jeweler & Watch retailer Gübelin is celebrating its 170th anniversary with 170 platinum pieces of its own watch, designed by star architect Santiago Calatrava, and powered by a historic Felsa movement. The watch is called Ipsomatic as a tribute to the history of the company. The name ‘Ipsomatic’ refers to a legendary model of the same name from the 1950s and 1960s by Gübelin with a Felsa movement. Derived from Latin, ‘Ipsomatic’ refers to the mechanical movement, with ‘ipso’ referring to the self-winding movement. Gübelin already presented a special Ipsomatic for its 100th anniversary in 1954, featuring a finely finished rotor engraved with the dates 1854-1954.
Case
The exceptional case of the Ipsomatic is made of platinum, reflecting its premium quality. It measures 39 mm in diameter at a height of 12.6 mm which wears well on the wrist. With a water resistance of 30 metres, it is advisable to avoid contact with water. The onion-shaped crown, engraved with the hourglass symbol from the Gübelin family coat of arms, facilitates the setting of time and winding.
Dial
The dial of the Ipsomatic is characterised by organic curves, a design element inspired by Calatrava’s architectural work. These shapes create a three-dimensionality that defines the watch’s identity. The hour and minute hands are elegantly elongated. The overall aesthetic embodies a contemporary interpretation of timekeeping.
Movement
Powering the Ipsomatic is a historical movement from Felsa, specifically the calibre 1560. This movement features the Bidynator system, allowing for bi-directional winding and representing a significant innovation in automatic movements. The movement has been meticulously restored and regulated, ensuring optimal performance. Felsa supplied movements to Gübelin as early as the 20th century, making this choice a nod to the brand’s history.
Strap
The Ipsomatic comes with a black calf-leather-strap that exudes elegance and complements the platinum case. It features a folding clasp engraved with the Gübelin name and set with the iconic Gübelin ruby, adding a distinctive touch and ensuring secure wear.
