The Blancpain Villeret Ultraplate now comes in 38 mm, pairing slim dresswatch proportions with calibre 1150 and a 100-hour power reserve.

What do nuclear reactors and the new Submersible GMT Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience Edition PAM01089 have in common? Both rely on the rare transition metal Hafnium. Beyond that, however, the differences are considerable.
While most people prefer to keep their distance from a nuclear reactor, Paneristi in particular can never get close enough to the object of their desire. Even when it comes to hafnium, worlds separate a nuclear facility from the new Submersible.
In a nuclear reactor, the objective is to capture free neutrons produced as a by-product of Nuclear fission in order to control them and prevent them from escaping unchecked. The new Submersible, by contrast, is said—at least according to the brand narrative – to protect against the intrusion of free neutrons, even though such particles are scarcely encountered in everyday environments.
Enough physics and storytelling – back to Panerai and its new proprietary material, Afniotech, which consists of 95 per cent hafnium: Afnio being the Italian word for hafnium, while tech refers to technology.
The Swiss watchmaker with Italian roots cites neutron absorption as the key reason for Afniotech’s debut. For the average wearer, however – someone unlikely to spend much time in a nuclear power station or similarly neutron-heavy environment – its other material properties are far more relevant. These characteristics significantly enhance the practical performance of the Submersible GMT Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience Edition PAM01089.
Hafnium, and therefore Afniotech, offers exceptionally high density, impressive toughness, excellent corrosion resistance and outstanding heat resistance. In short, ideal qualities for a mission-ready tool watch such as Panerai’s new PAM01089.
Even those leading a decidedly less adventurous life can put these capabilities to the test – provided they are willing to spend 90,000 euros. Each purchaser of the limited-edition watch, restricted to just 35 pieces, gains exclusive access to a three-day Navy SEALs Experience in Florida in March 2027. articipants will be pushed both physically and mentally during intensive training sessions alongside the world-renowned United States Navy SEALs.
Panerai launched its Experience Programme in 2019. At its core are extraordinary journeys defined by exceptional activities, privileged access and high-profile companions. Entry to these experiences is reserved exclusively for buyers of selected models, whose design and functionality reflect the spirit of each specific adventure.
In the case of the Afniotech Submersible, that means things are bound to get intense. Thanks to its new material and deliberately oversized components, this watch is built to withstand serious punishment. It is no coincidence that Panerai describes it as a “professional instrument for extreme operational conditions”.
The diving instrument features a substantial 47 mm case crafted from sandblasted Afniotech and fitted with a screwed titanium caseback. It is resistant to pressures of up to 100 bar and distinguished by a silver-grey hue with subtle bluish undertones, lending the watch a striking presence on the wrist. The sandblasted finish is not merely an aesthetic feature, however; it also serves an important functional purpose, ensuring the watch remains completely free of reflections underwater.
The unidirectional rotating bezel –also made of Afniotech – features squared knurling and, together with the rectangular crown protected by the brand’s emblematic crown-protecting device, ensures optimal handling, whether underwater with gloves or in other hostile environments.
In such conditions, legibility can become critical. The Submersible addresses this through generous use of Superluminova X2 on both bezel and dial. Even in poor visibility, such as at significant depth, the time, remaining dive time and second time zone can all be read at a glance. A date display at 3 o’clock completes the functional package.
Fully wound, the PAM01089 offers a power reserve of three days. This is made possible by the twin barrels of the automatic P.9010/GMT calibre. The movement also features independently adjustable hour setting and stop-seconds functionality, enabling precise synchronisation. The watch is secured by a robust black rubber strap fitted with a trapezoidal titanium buckle.
Not only are individual components of this limited Submersible deliberately over-engineered – the testing procedures also go far beyond industry norms.
Panerai employs a two-stage testing process. Representative production batches undergo extensive laboratory simulations replicating years of use under extreme conditions, while nearly every finished watch is additionally tested individually underwater prior to delivery. These procedures include water-resistance tests at pressures 25 per cent above the stated specification.
To assess thermal resistance, the watches are repeatedly exposed to temperature fluctuations between 70°C and 5°C. Additional testing includes accelerated ageing simulations, shock and corrosion testing, as well as evaluations of magnetic resistance, durability and material compatibility.
With Afniotech, Panerai expands its proven expertise in materials with one that is particularly challenging to work with. Equally noteworthy are the brand’s other proprietary innovations, including Ti-Ceramitech. Using a patent-pending titanium ceramisation process, in which the surface of a titanium alloy is transformed into a dense ceramic layer, Panerai also creates a distinctive proprietary blue hue. Ti-Ceramitech is 44 per cent lighter than steel and ten times more fracture-resistant than ceramic.
Carbotech, Goldtech and Platinumtech refer to particularly lightweight composite structures and highly resistant precious-metal alloys. Robustness is also a defining characteristic of BMG-Tech, an alloy based on metallic glass. Its resistance to corrosion, external shocks and magnetic fields ensures the watch remains virtually unchanged over time.
