Collective Horology and Zenith have unveiled the Defy Skyline C.X Edition, a limited edition watch that reinterprets the Defy Skyline with a focus on industrial design. This marks Collective Horology’s tenth project to be done in collaboration with another watch brand, and showcases a unique aesthetic and functional features. With a limited run of 200 pieces, the watch will be available through Collective Horology and the Zenith online boutique. Let’s take a closer look at this timepiece.
Case
The case of the Defy Skyline C.X Edition features the signature dodecagonal shape of the Defy Skyline. Made of stainless steel, the 41 mm-case has a matte sandblasted finish, except for the polished edges of the bezel. This contrast emphasises the industrial design of the watch. The dimensions remain consistent with the Defy Skyline, ensuring a robust presence on the wrist. The water resistance is rated at 10 bar (100 metres), providing adequate protection against water exposure. The flat sapphire crystal on the front and the transparent sapphire crystal on the caseback offer scratch resistance and durability, as well as a clear view of the movement inside.
Dial
The dial of the Defy Skyline C.X Edition showcases a matte silvery-grey colour with a gradient effect, achieved by deeper engraving of the four-pointed stars at the centre. This design enhances the three-dimensionality of the signature starry sky pattern. Unlike the classic Defy Skyline models, the dial notably omits the date window and moves the 1/10th of a second counter to 6 o’clock, creating a more balanced and symmetrical look.
The orange 1/10th of a second hand and the corresponding ’10’ mark add a pop of colour and reinforce the watch’s industrial design inspiration. The rhodium-plated, faceted hour markers and hands are coated with SuperLuminova SLN C1, ensuring readability in low-light conditions. Overall, the dial redefines the aesthetic of the Defy Skyline while maintaining its functional elements.
Movement
Inside the Defy Skyline C.X Edition beats a modified version of the El Primero 3620 automatic high-frequency calibre. This movement operates at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz) and features a silicon escape wheel and lever, ensuring precise and smooth operation of the chronograph functions. The 1/10th of a second indicator at 6 o’clock is driven directly by the escapement, showcasing the high-frequency precision of the El Primero movement. The power reserve is approximately 55 hours, and the movement is equipped with a stop-second mechanism for accurate time-setting. The transparent sapphire crystal caseback reveals the special oscillating weight with satined finishings, adding an extra touch of elegance to the technical workings of the watch.
Strap
The Defy Skyline C.X Edition comes with an integrated stainless-steel bracelet that features the same sandblasted matte finish as the case. The bracelet is robust and durable, complementing the watch’s overall design. Additionally, there is an orange textured rubber strap with a steel folding clasp, offering an alternative wearing option. Both straps can be easily swapped without any tools, thanks to the quick strap-change mechanism on the caseback. This practical feature adds to the versatility of the watch, allowing wearers to switch between different looks and styles.
