A Striking New Addition: The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 with A Blue Dial
The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 is back with a blue dial. The timepiece, which was first presented at Watches and Wonders 2023 in four variations, pays homage to the original design by Gérald Genta from the 1970s. With its striking case and integrated bracelet, the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is a modern interpretation of a classic. In this article, we take a closer look at the features and specifications of this watch.
Case
The stainless-steel case of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 measures, as the name suggests, 40 mm in diameter, while the case height of 10.8 mm provides the watch with a slim silhouette. Referencing the design of the original Ingenieur, five polygonal screws firmly attach the round bezel to the case ring. In addition, the case is equipped with a screw-down crown, which contributes to the durability of the watch. Moreover, the watch is water-resistant up to 10 bar, which corresponds to around 100 metres. The timepiece’s overall aesthetic makes it suitable for a variety of occasions – from casual to more classy occasions.
Dial
The dial of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 is deep blue in colour thanks to its PVD coating. It showcases a ‘grid’ pattern that consists of small square indentations, creating an interesting texture and depth. The applied hour markers and slim, pointed hands are rhodium-plated and coated with Super-LumiNova. This ensures good legibility in poor lighting conditions. At 3 o’clock, a date display seamlessly blends into the dial’s design.
Movement
Inside the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 ticks the 32111 calibre, an automatic movement with a power reserve of 120 hours. Like the Genta original, a soft-iron inner case encompasses the movement to shield it from the impact of magnetic fields. The calibre oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 A/h (4 Hz) and is equipped with a pawl-winding system that winds in both directions. Moreover, a screw balance enables the precise adjustment of the rate accuracy. True to the design of the original Ingenieur, the movement is not visible due to a closed caseback.
Strap
The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 is complemented by an integrated stainless-steel bracelet with brushed and polished H-links. It is equipped with a butterfly folding clasp that ensures a secure fit. Thanks to its refined ergonomics and the attachment for the center link, the bracelet offers an exceptional fit and is suitable for slimmer wrists.
Price and availability
The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 is available at a price of 12,900 euros. The watch is part of the regular collection and is not a limited edition. It can be purchased from authorized IWC dealers and boutiques, as well as online through the official IWC website.
