This multicolor ceramic, unveiled in the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic, represents a world-first. Developed over four years and protected by a pending patent, this material is not merely a fusion of pigments but the result of a highly sophisticated process requiring precise temperature control and structural know-how. The Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic is a 42mm chronograph, housing the HUB1280 movement, an automatic flyback chronograph with a 72-hour power reserve. The case and bezel feature a mix of dark gray and blue ceramic, creating a contrast against the skeletonized dial. Limited to 20 pieces, this model serves as a demonstration of Hublot’s latest material research rather than a large-scale production shift. While the introduction of Magic Ceramic expands the brand’s capabilities, its long-term application remains to be seen.
The case of the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic is made of microblasted and polished black ceramic, giving it a sleek and modern appearance. The dimensions are typical of the Big Bang line, with a diameter of 42 mm and a thickness of 14.50 mm. The water resistance is rated at 10 bar (100 m), making it suitable for swimming. The bezel, however, is where the new multicolour ceramic material is showcased. It features intense blue circles arranged in a seemingly random and organic pattern, reminiscent of contemporary abstract art. This is made possible by the patent-pending process that Hublot has developed to combine different ceramic pigments that require different baking temperatures. The caseback is also made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, allowing for a view of the movement inside.
The dial of the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic is matte black, providing a stark contrast to the vibrant colours of the bezel. It features the typical Big Bang layout with one sub-dial for the chronograph counter, as well as a date window at 3 o’clock. The hands and hour markers are coated with luminescent material, ensuring readability in low light conditions. The overall design is functional and straightforward, allowing the unique bezel to take centre stage.
Inside the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic beats the Hublot Calibre HUB1280, also known as the Unico 2, which is entirely developed and manufactured in-house. Introduced in 2018 as an evolution of the original Unico (HUB1240), this movement is notably slimmer at 6.75mm, allowing it to fit into 42mm cases. It features a column wheel chronograph system with a flyback function, enabling timing transitions with a single push. The movement consists of 354 components, operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and boasts a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. A standout feature is the visibility of the column wheel mechanism from the dial side, showcasing Hublot’s intricate engineering. Protected by four patents, the Unico 2 incorporates technical refinements, including a redesigned automatic winding system, to improve efficiency while maintaining the distinctive design elements of its predecessor. The movement is finished here in a black tone that matches the shade of the case. The oscillating weight is made of black-plated tungsten and has a circular satin finish.
The Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic comes with black rubber strap that provides comfort and durability. The strap also features a black-plated titanium deployant buckle clasp, ensuring a secure fit on the wrist. The “One-Click” system means that the straps can be easily replaced with other straps or bracelets without any tools.
The Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic is a limited edition of 20 pieces, making it a rare collector’s item. The price is 34,300 euros. The watch is available at Hublot boutiques and authorized dealers worldwide.
