W&W 2025: Roger Dubuis Excalibur Grande Complication – 30 Years of Complications
Roger Dubuis is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the brand with the Excalibur Grande Complication. This watch features a unique movement with a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, and tourbillon, all housed in a 45mm pink gold case.
Case & Strap
The case of the Excalibur Grande Complication is crafted from rose gold and measures 45 mm in diameter. The transparent sapphire crystal caseback offers a deep insight into the intricate mechanics of the movement, composed of 684 components. With a case height of 17.45 mm, the watch is secured to the wrist by an interchangeable brown calfskin leather strap, ensuring both comfort and a harmonious complement to the rose gold case. A rose-gold pin buckle enhances the aesthetic of this timepiece. Additionally, the case boasts a water resistance of 5 bar (50 metres).
Dial
The dial of the Excalibur Grande Complication is a true reflection of Roger Dubuis’ design philosophy. It features a Biretrograde display for the perpetual calendar, with separate scales for the day of the week and the day of the month. The month disc is located between 11 and 12 o’clock, and there is a small leap year indication.
Like all Roger Dubuis tourbillons, this flying construction, positioned between 5 and 6 o’clock, is executed in the brand’s signature aesthetic. The mirror-polished cage, taking inspiration from the Celtic Cross, and the strategic use of lightweight, non-magnetic titanium highlights its technical ingenuity. The Excalibur’s skeletonised hands add an extra layer of elegance to the dial.
Movement
At the heart of the Excalibur Grande Complication is the RD118 calibre, Roger Dubuis’ second Grande Complication movement. It includes a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, and tourbillon, all within a single movement. The minute repeater features a tritone chime, which, to Roger Dubuis, creates a rather unusual interval that defies expectations. Known as the devil’s chord or diabolus in musica during medieval times, the tritone chime strikes a low pitch for the hours, a high pitch for the minutes, and two tones for the quarter hours. The movement has a power reserve of 60 hours and is hand-decorated, meeting the Poinçon de Genève standards.
Price & Availability
The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Grande Complication is limited to 8 pieces. As such, it is available exclusively through Roger Dubuis boutiques and authorised dealers. The price of this exclusive watch is € 734,000.
