With the Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe, Hublot presents the fifth instalment in its Essential series. Since 2022, the range has followed a clearly defined principle: one colour, one design, once a year, and available exclusively online. The new edition is available in two versions with case diameters of 32 mm and 42 mm, each limited to 200 pieces. Hublot thus continues its monochrome line and, following the last model in Essential Grey, once again opts for a subtle yet striking colour scheme with Taupe – complemented by a 32 mm ladies’ model, which appears without diamonds for the first time in the history of the Spirit of Big Bang.
The Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe remains true to the line’s signature tonneau shape. Both models feature the distinctive case design, but differ in terms of material, size and visual presence on the wrist.
The smaller version measures 32 mm and is crafted from satin-finished and polished stainless steel. With a case thickness of 10.8 mm, it is the slimmer of the two models and appears correspondingly more understated on the wrist. The 42 mm version, on the other hand, is crafted from satin-finished and polished titanium and is significantly thicker at 14.1 mm, a feature largely attributable to the additional integrated chronograph.
Both models are water-resistant to 10 ATM or 100 metres. Another defining feature is the interplay of satin-finished and polished surfaces, which lends the case depth and contour without detracting from the monochrome effect of the Essential Taupe.
Taupe is the signature colour of this edition. The shade lies between grey and brown, remaining neutral in its effect, yet appearing warmer than the previous Essential Grey. Following on from Essential Grey, Taupe now expands the colour palette of the series with a warmer, less technical neutral tone.
In the 32 mm version, this concept is expressed in a particularly minimalist way: the ‘Sunny Taupe’ dial features a sunburst finish that lends subtle reflections to the watch’s understated appearance when light hits it. Combined with the three-hand display, this creates a calm, uncluttered face that deliberately avoids unnecessary decorative accents.
The 42 mm variant showcases the new accent colour of the Big Bang Essential model in a much more technical manner. Its dial features a carbon-look finish that creates visual interest not through material contrast but through surface texture: alternating satin-finished and polished squares produce a chequerboard-like pattern with a three-dimensional effect. In terms of design, Hublot thus builds on the Spirit of Big Bang Coal Blue.
Hublot thus interprets the same colour scheme in two different ways: the 32 mm version focuses on calm, a sunburst finish and a minimalist three-hand aesthetic, whilst the 42 mm version has a distinctly more technical look with its textured carbon finish and chronograph display.
The two versions also differ significantly in terms of their movements. The Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe 32 mm is powered by the HUB1120 automatic movement. It offers a power reserve of around 40 hours, beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and comprises 169 components and 18 jewels.
The Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe 42 mm is powered by the skeletonised HUB4700 self-winding chronograph movement. The calibre has a power reserve of approximately 50 hours and operates at a frequency of 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour. It comprises a total of 278 components and 31 jewels.
Hublot has therefore deliberately differentiated the models in terms of their movements: the 32 mm version focuses on a minimalist three-hand aesthetic, whilst the 42 mm version places greater emphasis on the technical character of the Spirit of Big Bang. The skeletonised chronograph movement lends the watch greater depth, enhanced functionality and a visibly more complex appearance.
Both models come with two interchangeable straps, thus remaining true to the tone-on-tone concept even on the wrist. The smaller Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe comes with a taupe-coloured strap made of rubber and Nytech fabric, as well as an additional taupe-coloured, lined rubber strap. The watch is secured on the wrist with a stainless steel folding clasp.
The Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe chronograph comes with a taupe-coloured textile strap with a Velcro fastening, as well as an additional taupe-coloured, lined rubber strap. Here, Hublot combines a titanium folding clasp with a sports clasp made of glass-bead-blasted M3 titanium. This gives the strap solution on the larger version a slightly more functional and technical look.
Like all models in the Essential series, the Spirit of Big Bang Essential Taupe is available exclusively online via the manufacturer’s own website. Both models are limited to 200 pieces each.
The 32 mm version is priced at €14,600. The 42 mm version costs €24,300. Hublot also highlights the 5+5 warranty, which allows the international warranty to be extended to up to ten years.
