Montblanc is presenting the 1858 Geosphere UltraBlack as part of the new UltraBlack Collection. The latter is a new cross-category range that aims to celebrate the colour black. Along with leather goods, Montblanc is also presenting a matching ballpoint pen from the StarWalker line and even wireless headphones. In addition to the new all-black look, the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere UltraBlack features the eye-catching world time complication with two rotating globes. As a special edition, however, the watch is limited to only 858 pieces.
The stainless steel case picks up on the explorer theme
In keeping with the spirit of the Geosphere collection, Montblanc presents the UltraBlack in a stainless steel case with a worn surface. The latter is created by hand by giving the black-coated steel a special satin finish. The watch measures 42 mm in diameter, which is usual for a Geosphere. The case also has an easy-grip bezel that can be turned in both directions and features the cardinal points.
The case back is engraved in the centre with a drawing of the Mont Blanc, two intersecting ice axes and a compass. On the periphery, the manufacture places the seven highest peaks of the seven continents, namely Mount Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson and Puncak Jaya. Last but not least, there is also a reference here to the model’s limitation. With a water resistance of 10 bar or 100 metres, the 1858 Geosphere UltraBlack should be suitable for most adventures.
With the dial, not only can the world time be kept in view
The dial of the 1858 Geosphere UltraBlack celebrates the colour black with contrasting grey and white elements. The world time complication, which consists of two domed globes, immediately catches the eye. Here you can see the two hemispheres, each divided into the 24 time zones. The thick lines mark the 0th degree of longitude and the 180th degree of longitude. In operation, they rotate around their own axis once a day. With the two 24-hour scales, the time of the respective zone can be read and a distinction made between day and night.
Meanwhile, the main hands indicate the local time. Like the numerals, indices, bezel and even the globes, they bear Super-LumiNova and are thus easily legible even at night. In addition, there is a sub-dial at 9 o’clock that indicates the home time via an hour hand. The latter can be independently adjusted forward and backward, with the date at 3 o’clock following too.
The calibre MB 29.25 inside the 1858 Geosphere UltraBlack
Montblanc equips the watch with the MB 29.25 calibre, which is based on the Selitta SW300-1. Here, the watchmakers have developed an in-house world time module that drives the two globes on the dial. In addition, the movement offers automatic winding with an autonomy of 42 hours. Equipped with a flat hairspring, it operates at a frequency of 4 hertz.
Leather strap with folding clasp
The watch appears on a black calfskin strap. Beige stitching provides contrast in several places. The strap measures 22 mm in width and terminates in a blackened stainless steel folding clasp. The latter also bears the Montblanc logo.
