Hublot is bringing us a new Big Bang wristwatch constructed from emerald green Saxem – only the second shade of this material that exists in the catalogue, alongside yellow. This time, a mere 100 people will be able to purchase this limited edition release from the brand.
The case of the new Big Bang Unico
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Green Saxem has a 42 mm case entirely constructed from a Hublot’s proprietary sapphire-like substance called Saxem. It has reduced strains, equal resistance and increased uniformity and luminosity, which is ideal for the neon colours in which it is produced. When sapphire is coloured, metallic oxides are added in order to obtain the correct hue, whereas with Saxem, the hue is achieved through the addition of what Hublot dubs ‘rare earth elements’. In addition, the chemical structure of Saxem differs to that of sapphire in that it is a cubic structure with 4 sides, as opposed to three.
The aesthetic effect of a Saxem case is one that appears to emit light, despite it not absorbing light under any circumstance. The bezel and case are held together with 6 contrasting dark grey titanium Hublot ‘H’ screws. The Hublot patented One Click System at 6 and 12-o-clock allows the strap to be removed in – you guessed it – one click.
Dial and movement
The open-worked dial allows for uninterrupted views of the HUB1280 UNICO-2, which Hublot refers to as a new generation of flyback chronograph movement with its new tungsten oscillating weight for improved performance, presumably due to its increased density over various other materials. As well as the crown and pushers, the calibre is PVD coated and at 6-o-clock displays the column wheel used during flyback chronograph activation. The entirety of the date wheel is visible, despite the presence of its aperture at 3-o-clock. The hands, hour markers and sub-dial counters are all coated in a green lume, which is precisely the same hue as that of the Saxem case that surrounds them.

Both "circle in the machine" and "world…
