Luminor Luna Rossa PAM01342: Panerai Serves Up A Brand New Look
Team Luna Rossa, winner of the Prada Cup during the most recent contest for America’s Cup, is among the top sailing clubs in the world. Now, the long-standing partner of Panerai is uniting with its Italian amici once again to introduce an all-new Luminor Luna Rossa timepiece: the PAM01342.
Coinciding with the beginning of the race for the next America’s Cup, taking place in Barcelona in 2024, the PAM01342 celebrates the continued partnership with the Luna Rossa team. The limited edition of 1,500 pieces is notably modern in its design, introducing a subtle new colour scheme of white, grey, and red. By contrast, its predecessors have had darker colour schemes, such as the recognisable grey Luna Rossa canvas dials. This fits well to the Luminor collection’s DNA, which is one of the brand’s most contemporary core lines.
The dial
The white dial of this collaborative new Luminor Rossa model is pretty understated, introducing a light, fresh colour scheme. Unsurprisingly, the watch features Panerai’s innovative ‘sandwich dial’. First appearing in the Radiomir, the specially constructed dial aims to achieve greater luminosity. While originally consisting of three parts, today’s sandwich dials by Officine Panerai use only two superimposed plates. To ensure the optimum level of luminescence and the best endurance over time, Panerai fill the watch’s baton and Arabic numerals with Swiss Grade A Super-LumiNova. This substance consists of special highly-performing pigments, promising 24/7 legibility – even at a depth of 100 m. In addition, Panerai provide small seconds at 9 o’clock, using a small red hand on the subdial.
The case
This brings us to the case, with its aforementioned water-resistance of 100 m (~10 bar). The sleek steel case, with a cushion exterior and round bezel, has a diameter of 44 mm. While Panerai use polished steel for the main body of the case, the caseback uses brushed steel. Notably, the Luminor uses ‘Safety Lock crown protection’. This system protects the watch from any bumps that may accidentally adjust the time, as well as from water getting in and damaging the movement.
The calibre
The movement powering the new Luminor Luna Rossa PAM01342 is Panerai’s own calibre P.6000. The trusty manual-winding movement has a frequency of 21,600 vph (3 Hz). Alongside providing hours, minutes, and seconds, the calibre conceived in the company’s Neuchatel manufacture delivers a solid power reserve of three days.
Price and strap
Last but not least, the Luminor Luna Rossa PAM01342 comes with a bi-material strap with a fitting grey and red colour scheme. Team Luna Rossa’s logo also makes an appearance. The watch secures to the wrist with the help of a hardy steel buckle. Finally, the price of this new limited edition timepiece is 6,200 euros.
