W&W 2020: Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech 44 mm – PAM01118
70 years ago, Panerai first introduced the tritium-based luminous substance Luminor – now, the Florentine watchmaker launches the Luminor Marina Carbotech 44 mm (PAM01118) with further improved luminosity, an innovative material and a service warranty of 70 years.
Ever since the 1940s, Panerai has continuously worked on improving the emission of light. By using SuperLumiNova X1, they have mastered a crucial step to even further enhance the visibility in the dark. On the new Luminor Marina Carbotech 44 mm, the luminescent substance has also been applied on the bridge protecting the winding-crown and its locking lever, as well as the flange, the inscription on the dial and the stitching of the strap.
Carbotech consists of thin layers of carbon fibres superimposed on each other, orientated alternately (a good seven layers per millimetre), and fused together under high-pressure temperature-controlled conditions. Finally, it is further consolidated with an advanced polymer. It is light and resistant to both pressure and corrosion.
The new PAM01118 runs with calibre P.9010, which has a 72 hours power reserve. It was entirely conceived and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. The 6 mm thin automatic movement is fitted with the function for quickly setting the time, which at the same time modifies the date. The PAM01118 ‘s movement has a power reserve of three days, provided by its twin spring barrels.
In 2019, the brand introduced the Pam-Guard care programme, whereby the warranty of all watches bought within the past two years can be extended to another six years. To mark the occasion of the 70th ’Luminor’ anniversary, it is offering a warranty of an incredible 70 years for this model. Throughout this period, Panerai will maintain the good working order of the client’s watch as necessary under the terms and conditions of the international warranty.
The new Luminor Marina Carbotech 44 mm is water-resistant to 30 bar (300 m) and is worn on a black strap made of Panerai ‘Sportech’ – a woven fabric to give a waterproof rubberised effect, with luminous stitching and a Velcro fastener. A second rubber strap, black with a trapezoid titanium buckle, is also supplied, as is a dedicated tool for changing straps.
The PAM01118 watch, including the second strap and changing tool, comes in a special box with a luminous image of the iconic dial of the ‘Luminor Marina’ on its lid. The Luminor Marina Carbotech 44 mm PAM01118 is limited to 270 pieces and is exclusive to Panerai Boutiques. It costs 16,000 euros.
